well the category is basically best song written specifically with the movie in mind.
so its only contender would have been "come what may."

I disagree with this. although, I don't think Gosford Park deserves the acclaim it's gotten, definitely not these nominations. I think it's just academy sympathy, which he does sort of deserve. He's made films that should have gotten him a statue in the past, but didn't, and there going to make it up to him this year, or something.

Oh, he's a great film maker, but he's also an ungrateful, spoiled idiot when it comes to politics...

Thank god Black Hawk Down only got the directorial nomination. That was enough to piss me off but best picture would probably make me lose it.

I would like to point something out.

In the last decade or so, both Titanic and Gladiator won best picture, while Fargo and LA Confidential did not. Oh, and The Godfather, Part III, despite being atrocious, was nominated for best picture as well.

Point being, do the Oscars really matter?

However, since we are discussing: Tenenbaums and Monsters, Inc. (way better than Shrek) both got screwed over ... but not nearly as much as Mulholland Drive, the best film of the year.

The Good:
-Altman getting a directing nod despite the DGA snub (what in the hell were they thinking??)

-Amelie getting 5 noms

-Ridley scott getting a directors nod

-Memento getting 2 nods

The Bad:

-Sean Penn, Will Smith over Gene Hackman and Billy bob thorton?

-Jon Voight over Steve Buscemi?

-Jimmy Neutron over Waking Life?

the nominations are pretty atrocious.

best picture. hmm. of the 5, i've only seen lord of the rings. i guess i should go see if A Beautiful Mind sucks as much as i expect it to. i'm rooting for In the Bedroom.

best actor. this is the worst category. i don't really care who wins. russel crowe again? ugh. i hated gladiator. but he was pretty awesome in the insider. i guess i'll root for Wilkinson.

best director. i haven't seen Mulholland Drive. i'm not even sure it was screened near here. but i'm rooting for Lynch in this category. Ron Howard is a fuck.

best screenplay is the best category. tough decision here. idunno. all the films actually sound good to me.

the rest of the ones i'll root for: Spacek for actress, Kingsley for supporting actor, Ghost World for adapted screenplay, LOTR for art direction (yes, i think that this film was awesome in that department), The Man Who Wasn't There for cinematography, AI for visual effects, AI for score, Amelie for foreign film.

and the funny thing is i haven't seen most of the movies i root for. i have to wait for video for most good films, since none play around here.

Moulin Rouge for best picture?

Moulin Rouge was a unique concept movie, and no matter how lousy concept movies are, they usually get at least a considerable amount of attention during the Oscars.

That said, it's one of the most overrated movies I've EVER seen...The Royal Tenebaums was three times as good.

If LOTR doesn't win it, I'll be disappointed. Although In The Bedroom looks interesting enough (I haven't seen it yet), the rest of the movies are undeserving of Best Picture.

It's true, it's true.
