Last night -

A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation...

I'm really fucking enjoying ATCQ. I like the mellowness and the old samples. I was in bed falling asleep towards the end of It Takes an Nation, and got freaked the fuck out by the Madonna sample, because I recognised that MBV had used it in one of their songs.

Tonight -
Iggy and the Stooges - Raw Power
R.E.M. - Murmer
Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
The KLF - White Room

Also later-
Steve Reich - Music for 18 Musicians
Maro Ajemian - Sonatas and Interludes (John Cage)

Well maybe not that Cage one because some fucker has spilt the album into three RAR files and put them on rapidshare of all sites. It's making me wait 80 minutes between downloading each part.

They're not really cut out stylistically for any huge commercial success, what with being so deliberately weird and eclectic, but they do have a pretty huge cult following. Lots of music mags like to refer to them as 'Kurt Cobains Favourite Band', they were mentioned a bit in that movie Juno, etc.

They played a big metal festival over here earlier this year and they closed the stage they were on, which put them higher up the bill than both Slayer and Trivium, who both have sold upwards of a million units.

Melvins destroyed when I saw them at emos in Austin. Stoner Witch is cool but I like Bullhead, Lysol, Eggnog, and The Maggot (and all their 80s shit like ozma is great skronky sludge)

Advice on 18 musicians: the original ECM recording (all one hour-long track, no splits) is the best. It's the fastest (which really serves the music) and has the best "live sound" while also maintaining pitch/accuracy/clarity. Then, check out the nonesuch recording from the 90s (separate tracks, probably the most common version). It's slower, and some of the instruments are recorded a little too close and mixed a little high (overall a little too "produced" compared to the ECM version) but it's still achingly gorgeous.

That's the one I got. Reminds me of certain parts of Tubular Bells, and even the MBV demo "2".

Are you serious?! You love fuzzy guitar tones and you haven't listened to the freaking Melvins?! You're going to jizz buckets, friend.

Jesus dude, get on this right now. Start with Stoner Witch, Houdini and Stag and move out from there. Stylistically they lean towards metal more than alternative rock. They're definitely far heavier than, say, Dinosaur Jr or something. That said their palette is huge.

The early stuff is mega-neanderthal sludge/doom, they have some straight up heavy metal moments (The Bit is absolute genius, see below), and a lot of the stuff from the last 15 years leans towards acid-fucked proto-hardcore punk as well as including a lot of experimenting with multiple vocalists, loops and soundscapes, weird song structure, and crazy percussion.

A few years ago they hooked up with another band called Big Business (who also rule), and since then they've started to develop a very unique new sound with the two drummers/four vocalists thing. I saw them earlier this year and they caved my face in.
