No, because NIN doesn’t have a die hard fan group for people on the spectrum

When’s the last time Billy ever got over a 6.5/10 on Pitchfork

The epitome of hipster relevancy whether or not you agree the metrics speak for themselves that Pitchfork writes the book on what is considered “good music” by the music community

NIN getting good reviews on a website that pulls the demographic for young critically tuned in music listeners=relevant

NIN getting press on fucking local TV for fans lining up 8 hours to get tickets=relevant

NIN selling out venues=relevant

Now I’m done let me go fap to The Perfect Drug live

Pitchfork readership has severely declined over the past decade. I don’t know anyone who still goes there. They are, in fact, no longer a culturally relevant site. But if you need their approval on what you can listen to then more power to you.

I will say NIN, Radiohead and (kinda SP) are the only things from the 90s I listen to nowadays pretty much exclusively metal anyway

No Shaddaloo, I'm just not a Trent fanboy. There's plenty of people who agree that NIN peaked with TDS. The Fragile was panned when it came out. Talk about a bloated double album. Laughable that he thought he could outdo Corgan and MCIS. It should have been a single disc, loads of filler on the Fragile. With Teeth was like self parody with all the poorly written teen angst lyrics. The rest is barely worth mention.

I mean, I'll agree that it doesn't get better than TDS and there have been a few misses but Trent's never put out anything I'd call embarrassingly bad, just average at worst. Usually at least a handful of very decent tracks on every release.

Marching On should have been their single. Short and sweet.

I'd agree with that. I actually thought The Slip was quite good for a later period album.

The Fragile is in another league above SD or MCIS haha

Trent didn’t have to outdo Corgan, he just did.

I would also go so far as to say Trent’s peak was Fragile but he’s stayed close ever since

And nah, Fragile is great. A bit bloated but it's full of quality stuff. With Teeth was average, Year Zero was bloody great, Ghosts was a thoroughly good collection of mood pieces, The Slip was fifty-fifty, Hesitation Marks was average, and the last 3 EPS are his best work in ages and ages.

Guy never puts out work where there's a consensus that it's a thoroughly bad album or effort like Teargarden.

The Downward Spiral is equal to SD or MCIS. The Fragile, not by a long shot, it's on par with Adore in commercial and critical reception and was considered a relative disappointment compared to the previous monster album. The allmusic review is spot on:

Commercial disappointment but was not critical whatsoever

Time was very friendly to it as well

You wouldn’t like it because you’re too stupid to hear the layers

lol i don't even care about nin and i'm okay with radiohead i guess and the idea that billspy is anywhere near their level is fuckin' laughable.

88-00 SP is a band that existed and changed our lives in that brief period. nin and rh are pretty well considered innovative/active/challenging bands 30 years into their careers.

I've never considered NIN as a band that was better than golden era SP. To me they're a step below, but to each their own. For one Trent is a terrible lyricist who recycles the same themes about anger and internal voids over and over again that sound like a 13 year old boy wrote them. Anyways, let's get back to being disappointed with Shiny Oh So Bright pls.

The idea that SP is anywhere near NIN/Radiohead is fucking laughable and not shared literally anywhere outside of here or Sad Machines

My expectations for this "album" were low - I was thinking that it would just be a small improvement upon the disaster that is MTAE, but I was wrong. Shiny vol.1 is really solid work, and promises well for future installments. They prove that they can sound every bit as SP1 as anyone could want in "Marchin' on". My only big issue is actually that grating backing vocal in "Knights of Malta". "With Sympathy" brings Zwan-y goodness, and somehow even "Solara" has really grown on me. The closest comparison to this in the Pumpkins catalogue is "Zeitgeist", but this sounds like that record was supposed to sound. And that sense of added soundscape Iha provides really does make a huge difference, in terms of this sounding like The Smashing Pumpkins.

Also

Billy > Trent on every level.

Fan engagement, musical genius, music videos, innovative live shows (no NIN show has ever come close to the latest SP tour)
