Other day at a show, I ran into this girl I took out once. We seemed to like each other when we went out, but our schedules never quite worked out for any of the follow-up dates I proposed, and eventually you just quit trying to arrange things and accept that 'twas never meant to be.

But the story of our one date is funny, so I should tell it. Happened some time last spring I think? I don't think I've told this one yet, so here's something from the DiscoDate Archives.

So, she was a girl from one of my classes. She had similar political views to me and seemed cool and had awesome style, so I took her number.

I texted her, asking her if she'd want to go to this event, and she said yes. However, her stepdad ended up having a medical emergency, so she had to cancel.

A bit later, I texted her again, asking her if she wanted to go for frozen yogurt. She agreed.

She got a little lost (I confused the frozen yogurt place with another one and gave her the wrong place name), so I had to wait for her a little while. To pass the time, I was just practicing some photography in the park nearby.

Eventually she shows up and greets me in the park. However, she says she can't chat long, because she has to meet a friend. I'm a bit taken off guard by that, because we had arranged this, but I assumed that maybe she had something scheduled with a friend right after our date, and her being late meant that she had no remaining time before she had to meet that friend, so I just kinda shrugged it off.

Then I notice that she enters the frozen yogurt place (which I call "frogurt!") that we were going to meet at. I start to realize something is amiss, but I just dismiss it as "Maybe she was meeting that friend at the same place we were meeting? What a coincidence."

Then I get a text from her telling me she's arrived at the frogurt place, and asking me how long I'll be.

It's then that I realize that we've got a case of mistaken identity on our hands (though, not gonna lie for a brief second, I also considered schizophrenia as a possible explanation). I text her back, saying that there must have been some sort of miscommunication, and asking her if she perhaps has another friend named Disco King.

I go to meet her in the frogurt joint. She apologizes profusely. She tells me that she does in fact have another friend named Disco King, and when I had texted her asking if she wanted to meet up, she thought I was that friend, who she hadn't seen for a little while. I guess she forgot to save my contact under something that would distinguish me from the other guy. She assures me that I shouldn't think that she wouldn't have wanted to meet with me.

She seemed super embarrassed, so I tried to put her at ease, telling her it wasn't a big deal, that I wasn't upset or offended or anything. It was just a funny story that could have happened to anyone who knew more than one king of disco.

The date starting off on this foot kinda threw me off my game, making it a bit awkward. However, I think we ended up getting along well, because we ended up sitting and talking in that joint for maybe four hours.

At the end of the thing, I told her that when I asked her to meet me, I had a date in mind, but understanding that she may not know that seeing as she didn't even know it was me, I would be open to just hanging out as friends if she wasn't interested in dating. She said she was open to going on dates with me, and that we should go on a "real one" soon.

I still wasn't sure if she was really into me, or if she was being polite because of the awkwardness of the situation. But not long after that kinda-date-thing, we were attending the same show, and when she was heading to the venue, she texted me "see you soon" with heart emojis. I've never had anybody send me heart emojis before. It seemed even weirder after only a single date. I was actually wondering if she had confused me with that other Disco again, but she knew it was me that time.

Not much happened at the last show encounter. We just chatted and joked for a bit, and then I said that we should hang out again sometime soon.

Yeah, though I'd have to go out with her again to see if I really feel it. I didn't feel the chemistry on that first date, but that could have been because of the awkwardness throwing us off.

Although part of me wondered if maybe I also didn't feel it because, even though we had a lot of common ground, it kinda made me reconsider if I really want a person who's that similar to me. I mean, she seems to also be a political person, we talked a lot about culture, politics, gender, inequality, and society and all that stuff, and while I enjoy being with people who I can talk about that stuff with, I've kind of found that the people with whom I can talk about that stuff with aren't always the ones I end up being drawn to romantically.

But of course, she obviously has more sides to her than just interest in discussing those things, so if we ever do go out again, I guess I just have to poke around to find out what those things are. But overall, I find that I feel the click more with the art-school girls than with the sociology girls, despite not being an artist myself. Maybe because it's a part of me that I've always longed to develop, but haven't had the time to. So, I like talking to people from that realm.

Trying not to boil people down to their school majors, but I'm just speaking generally here.

My favourite thing that I wanted to become my "how we met" story was that girl I was dating that I met at some techno dance thing after seeing that she was the only other person who looked as out of place as I did. The monochrome outfit and very subtle art goth style, whereas everybody else was ravers, candy kids, and 35-year-old circa-2010 hipsters with the twirly mustaches (one of the guys I went with was legit a barista who rides a fixed-gear bicycle).

Too bad she didn't feel the chemistry. It's hard not to kick myself over that one, because I feel like we were really compatible, and it was my own lack of romantic boldness that killed things. I feel like if I had only been less in my head and less scared to make moves and just talk freely instead of second-guessing everything I would say, things might have turned out otherwise.

At least we're still friends, though we haven't hung out since dating yet. I did want to put some time before that, enough time to totally rid myself of the illusion that "maybe I can win her back" or something, because going into a friendship with that mindset and motivation would be deceptive and unfair to her. It was hard to get it out of my head and just accept reality.

If you were able to reconcile after the awkward beginning and talk for four hours, I think she wasn't just being polite, esp if you offered to just hang out as friends

maybe introduce yourself as Everlasting Gaze

That's a perfectly cromulent thing to do. Most people in my major are weird. I mean I probably am too but I don't like it. Liberal arts people are way more fun to talk to

So I went on another first date today.

Since I figured that my problem with keeping the interest of previous dates has been being too restrained and not being bold enough, I tried going for more physical intimacy today. She seemed receptive.

Only thing... she kisses kinda weird. Instead of softly interlocking lips, her mouth is wide open and she kind of goes straight to sticking her tongue right into my mouth. I tried to subtly direct it in the direction of more playing with lips, but she didn't really catch on to what I was trying to do, and kept on with the tongue.

The part I do enjoy is that she kinda bites me a little bit. But I'd still prefer a kiss to start in a gentle, subdued manner.

It's kind of tragic that I can only work up the nerve to kiss people I'm not as deeply into because it's less intimidating. And then the ones I'm smitten with, I get too scared to make a move, and they end up getting bored and not feeling any spark.

I liked the girl I saw tonight well enough, we got along and talked a lot, but I'm not as into her as I was into that last girl who recently broke things off.

Oh well. Since that last girl and I decided to remain friends, I'm trying to meet new people rather quickly so I don't end up being "that guy" who hovers around a female friend hoping she'll come around. I want to have a sincere friendship, because I don't think friendships last long when one party has other motives.

Seeing this other girl some time next week. I really liked her style and complimented her outfit, and she was like "omg we've met before." I was like, "really, where?" I didn't recognize her right away, but it turns out she was a girl I chatted her up once who seemed really interested, but then this other fellow joined our conversation, and before I new it, it was her stop and I didn't have enough time to get her number. We made sure to exchange numbers, and she was like, "awesome, now we don't have to wait another few months until we happen to run into each other again!"

I dunno, she's younger than I am, but I'm a late bloomer, and she mentioned having an ex, so she's most likely more experienced than I am. I had to teach myself kissing through the fucking internet. My first time, I literally just pressed my lips against the girl's, didn't interlock lips or anything. Just dryly pressing faces together. I was like, "maybe kisses aren't supposed to feel like anything?" At one point, see was probably trying to part her lips, but our lips were still pressed, so I just felt this weird chewing motion. It was pretty embarrassing, and it was the most awkward date ever for other reasons.

All of that chick's friends were junkies, so even though I wasn't into her, I wanted to remain friends so I could introduce her to my friend group and give her some peers who would be healthier for her. But she never responded to my "I'd like to just be friends" text.

I think we have to go to zeroth base within the first 20 minutes of a date. Underneath the skin. Two spooky skeletons interlocking ribs. Otherwise, she'll see me as just a friend. A boring, fleshy friend.
