I don't know shit about astrology, guys. I have nothing constructive to add there.
Rhinoceros is an important song to me, as it marks the first Gish-era song I ever heard and the first time I began to understand the full breadth and scope of the Pumpkins' sound. It also solidified me as a lifelong Pumpkins fan. Since Adore was my first Pumpkins album (I know, I know what you're all thinking, and I'm almost scared to admit it here) I kind of started there and worked backwards in terms of buying the music. I somehow ended up purchasing Lull before Gish or Siamese Dream--probably because I was going into stores and grabbing whatever Pumpkins music they had in stock before doing any real research, as any young person beginning a healthy obsession would do. Rhinoceros was one of those "love at first listen" songs. After getting over my initial shock at how far removed it was from Adore and Mellon Collie, I loved everything about it--the dreamy guitars, the bizarre lyrics, the strangely unsettling yet peaceful mood it put me in. I don't know if I'm articulating this very well, but it was kind of the precursor to the way I'd come to listen to Gish, Siamese Dream and PI later. Adore is responsible for my becoming a fan, but Rhinoceros takes all the credit for pushing me over the edge into "tr00 fan" territory. Um... sorry about semi-cheating in talking about Lull instead of Gish. |
