Venom looks like shit, though. I have no idea why the response to the trailer has been so positive.

Shazam! seemed way more endearing than I expected, thought that was a solid trailer. Yes! I don't get the hype around it. It has to be because people already love the character beforehand doesn't it? |

So, we live in the universe where Shaquille O'Neal played Kazaam instead of Sinbad.

Divergent - C+
A teenage girl fights for her life in a post-apocalyptic America, unintentionally taking down a dystopian/Orwellian government. Sound familiar? Apparently a Hunger Games cash cow rip-off (there are more like this??) that might be fairly interesting if you discard logic. After all, a futuristic aptitude test shows that 95% of all people just somehow conform to one of five types, because each pretty much has one defining virtue? Are people in the future just that one-dimension, or just the screenwriter's concept of character? Oh yeah, and then they can inexplicably be easily be brainwashed but that 5% somehow can't... or something? You know it's pretty bleh when the best part of it is an icy Kate Winslet as a villain. Divergent Series: Insurgent - C- You'd think there was a time jump between films in the way some characters have changed (wow Tris cuts her hair and all of the sudden she's Sarah Connor?), but apparently this film takes up right where the last one ended. Insurgent assumes you remembered the half-baked dystopia from the previous film, so it needn't bother with establishing, well, anything. While this one makes up for the missing action in the first film, the characters seem to be simply drifting around in every other post-Apocalyptic trope. Not even a half-assed Naomi Watts can make this not excruciating. |

Divergent: Allegiant - D+
The third (and thankfully the prematurely-final) film in the Divergent series begins a bit more promising, as the main characters leave the Orwellian Chicago and we get to see a bit of what the rest of America looks like, although we only get so far as O'Hara Airport (oh and Providence, apparently). Everything is promising (do we get to see mutant cannibals??) until a ho-hum Jeff Daniels slows everything back down again to dwell on the ridiculousness of the previous films' "five factions" (oh this again?). By this point in time I no longer care if Daniels is like Chicago's Matrix Architect and if he's a good guy or a bad guy or whatever because I just want this dismal drivel to end. Judging by the cancellation of the fourth film, so did all of the actors, filmmakers and audience. |

I have had a lot of movies wreck my shit and reduce me to a blubbering pool of tears, but Issa Lopez's Tigers Are Not Afraid lands somewhere squarely up top of that list. Any comparisons to Guillermo Del Toro are justified.
Make it a point to see it when you can. Bring tissues. A+ |

One things for sure, they certainly don't make 'em like this any more. Nor, I suspect, would anyone want them to. El Topo ("The Mole") is the deeply eccentric brainchild of veteran dingbat Alejandro Jodorowsky as he embarked on a film-making career as the 1970s dawned. As viewed through the out-of-their-gourd brainstems of a generation of American hippies, it was a key part of the "midnight movie" phenomenon, as celebrated by the recent documentary. If you're stone cold sober, it comes out a charmingly slapdash assemblage of mostly extraordinary - though sometimes idiotic - images and setpieces, culled seemingly indiscriminately from the planet's more lurid myth systems: Christian, pagan, pre-Columbian, you name it. There is a tenous narrative logic - in which Jodorowsky himself, dressed in cowboy black, must gun down four desert-dwelling killers - which gives the film a measure of watchability. But it's hardly deep.
-some douche "If you are great, El Topo is a great picture. If you are limited, El Topo is limited." -Jodorowsky |

The Post - B
The Spielberg newspaper movie about the pentagon papers leak at NY Times and Washington Post, with Tom Hanks and Marilyn Streep (AND both Bob Odenkirk and David Cross!) Really good except for 3 Spielbergian monologues that take you out of reality, plus a retarded shot of Streep walking past these perfectly arranged women... you'll know what I mean if you see it |

Nice cinematography and editing. Chris Pine was good. Felt kind of “staged” to this native Texan. |

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them - B-
A klutzy and overly-CGI'd expansion to the Harry Potter series in the form of a prequel centering around a character we feel nothing for and is never really developed, set in 1925 New York. Other interesting characters that have promise fall to the wayside (Katherine Waterston's Auror Tina) or are only seen for literal minutes (Depp's Grindelwald). Blame should be laid with JK Rowling herself, for thinking she could be a screenwriter. Regardless, fans of Harry Potter would enjoy the expansion into a full-fledged cinematic universe, and I did enjoy seeing the American version of the wizarding world. The ploddiness can be excused with the promise that future installments will be better--much like the Harry Potter films themselves. |
