I mean look it's two forms of water with different concentrations of a second ingredient

espresso and regular coffee are different. I'm not sure what the disagreement is about, but if it's about that, they are different

We're referring to methods of extraction.

While I can accept that a cappuccino differs from a flat white, a long black prepared with an espresso machine or a plunger is still a long black. The difference is that one will be shit.

del, I think I misunderstood the debate

but again, I have always been told that french press actually produces the best quality, or at least that it is preferred by a significant number of coffee snobs

Is cooked Jasmine a completely different food item depending on whether you've just prepared it in a pot on the stove or with a Breville rice maker?

I don't know tbh. I read the thread through twice and still don't quite understand what the debate is about, so the problem might be my head

but I feel like I am back on the SP board reading Elph and Monuments argue about whether popularity is a measure of "good" without ever defining what constitutes "good"

There's a difference between "espresso" and "an espresso."

A large part of me wonders if this is where things went wrong.

I see your point but also there's no significant difference in the concentration of rice to water either way right?

It's not exactly been a demonstration of how to understand words so far and there's only so much time in a day.

to my knowledge, espresso is a fine grind of coffee, and to make espresso a drink, hot water is pumped through it. the result is a thicker, stronger coffee than a regular brew. in the US, a lot of coffee is americano style, which is espresso ground coffee but instead of drinking it in a concentrated shot, it is diluted with water until it's the size of a regular cup of coffee. basically.

in bosnia all you can get in cafes are espressos. they never heard of cup of coffee. the closest thing to it is what they called "turkish coffee", which is boiling ground coffee right in the water, with no filter or nothing. then they serve that shit with the grounds in it. it's awful. fucking south-slavs.

dude. how can you not like turkish coffee

or are bosnians just really bad at doing turkish coffee?

in the Middle East they make a similar thing called "qahwah" (no idea what the correct transliteration is) which is brewed in a little metal pot thing called a finjan. It's so good, I'm getting caffeine shakes just thinking about it

If you don’t start with freshly roasted yirgacheffe, the espresso and the plunger coffee will both be shit, so who cares?

Concentrating the flavour of beans with a poor flavour profile doesn’t do it for me any more than a cup of plunger tesco coffee.

If you know some magic source that stocks yirgacheffe year round, then by all means let me know. But last time I was serious about beans, supply was patchy. As you’d expect, because everyone in the world wants yirgacheffe and the region can only produce a certain amount.

I’ve had a lot of bad home espressos made with bad beans, a bad machine and a bad grinder, and you know, the Tesco in the plunger will be fine.

Tbh a Nescafe will also be fine.

By "an espresso," you'd surely be referring to a single shot of coffee prepared via the method of extraction one could expect from an espresso machine.

With the same machine going about its extracting ways in the usual manner, however, one could ultimately prepare a flat white or cappuccino or long black or latte or [insert other truths here]. The impact that any water and/or milk addition has upon the strength and consistency of the resulting beverage will not mean it is no longer espresso coffee.

Next, we can argue about whether "an espresso" counts as synecdoche.

I don't understand how you got here from queen saying that brewed coffee and espresso are two distinct things

You don't make brewed coffee by adding water to espresso I don't understand

I agree with this, because espresso FIRSTLY refers to the grind of the beans. An Americano is specifically watery espresso, but it's not what you would get if you asked for "an espresso." This is so simple I thought you must mean something else, which is why I... still don't really understand the debate
