1994 billy vocals would not make Z into an amazing album that is comparable in quality to anything that came before it

It's really sad that so many of us have spent the last 13 years wondering when and whether bill would eventually make a better record.

Zeitgeist is a collection of riffs taken too far, paired with weak lyrics, lackluster vocals, mediocre mixing, and hubris.

I don't know whether it would have been better had James and D'arcy had been there in the studio building those same songs. Maybe... bill seems to need someone to produce him, edit him, and add to his songs to create really good SP songs. But since 2000 he has been opposed to submitting any control of his work to others.

i'm done with the concept of Billy ever making "good music" again, or at the very least sounding good vocally in the way he used to. not even because i'm a pessimist or anything, just because like, why? there's so much other worthwhile music out there, from all eras, including Bill & Jimmy's own from decades past. "Marchin' On" was a cute little tease but was apparently just that, and this new stuff took the bizarre laughability of something like "Alienation" & just ran a fucking mile with it

it's a bizarre black comedy by this point, just funny enough for me to stick around & watch, but not funny enough for me to willingly listening to a full 70+ minutes of Sam Hayne

bill does have the ability to use his voice the way it is now to make great SP music. Not SP level. But at least interesting. TFE is a really interesting record. And you can hear a smattering of other interesting bits and pieces here and there since then. But it is few and far between. When he tries to build a heavy guitar SP style song and badly mixes his current very flat vocal over it, it always just sounds wrong. His vocal performace, though, works really well with acoustic and some electronic sounds.... where he doesn't push his voice so hard.

Spot on, JG. I'm pretty much in the same boat.

I follow Billy pretty regularly but I don't have the desire to listen to his new music other than a few songs at a time. For me it's a combination of the way he acts in his Instagram Q&As and the fact that I have a lot of other music I want to hear.

And yet, I kind of root for the guy anyway. I'm sincerely looking forward to the MCIS/Machina sequel. I hope Billy just goes all out and indulges his most grandiose ambitions for that one.

Really??? What happened? It must've been something really major in order for Billy to cancel a plan he's had since 1995.

I disagree. 1994 Billy vocals would make Z into classic Pumpkins

out of those albums

Oceania is the best.. note: too bad the drums are garbage

Zeitgeist is second best.. note: would be #1 on this list if it included Gossamer

MTAE third best / borderline pure garbage

and the other two albums are pure garbage
but Cyr comes out ahead of No Future / No Sun in my mind

Maybe on the rock chart. But that's a very small pond compared to the Billboard top 100.

Top rock albums? Is there much new "rock" music? Cyr, rock?
