What will be the aftermath if the arena tour fails to sell?
Just LOOK at this list:
https://i.imgur.com/n6y2KmR.png (amoergosum's screenshot) July 12 — Glendale, AZ @ Gila River Arena July 14 — Oklahoma City, OK @ Chesapeake Energy Arena July 16 — Austin, TX @ Frank Erwin Arena July 17 — Houston, TX @ Toyota Center July 18 — Dallas, TX @ American Airlines Center July 20 — Nashville, TN @ Bridgestone Arena July 21 — Louisville, KY @ KFC Yum! Center July 22 — Atlanta, GA @ Infinite Energy Arena July 24 — Miami, FL @ AmericanAirlines Arena July 25 — Tampa, FL @ Amalie Arena July 27 — Baltimore, MD @ Royal Farms Arena July 28 — Philadelphia, PA @ Wells Fargo Center July 29 — Uncasville, CT @ Mohegan Sun Arena July 31 — Boston, MA @ TD Garden August 1 — New York, NY @ Madison Square Garden August 4 — Pittsburgh, PA @ PPG Paints Arena August 5 — Detroit, MI @ Little Caesars Arena August 7 — Montreal, QC @ Centre Bell August 8 — Toronto, ON @ Air Canada Centre August 11 — Columbus, OH @ Schottenstein Center August 13 — Chicago, IL @ United Center August 16 — Kansas City, MO @ Sprint Center August 17 – Indianapolis, IN @ Bankers Life Fieldhouse August 19 — St. Paul, MN @ Xcel Energy Center August 20 — Omaha, NE @ CenturyLink Center August 21 — Sioux Falls, SD @ Denny Sanford Premier Center August 24 — Seattle, WA @ KeyArena August 25 — Portland, OR @ Moda Center August 27 — Oakland, CA @ Oracle Arena August 28 — Sacramento, CA @ Golden 1 Center August 30 — Los Angeles, CA @ The Forum September 1 — San Diego, CA @ Viejas Arena September 2 — Las Vegas, NV @ T-Mobile Arena September 4 — Salt Lake City, UT @ Vivint Smart Home Arena September 5 — Denver, CO @ Pepsi Center September 7 — Boise, ID @ Ford Idaho Center It would take a miracle to sell a respectable amount of tickets to even half of those huge venues. Billy's really gambling on James + oldies setlists being the magic bullet that will make masses care the way they haven't since the 90s. The chances are it won't work. What's he gonna do, lick his wounds and attempt to assemble a new reunion tour after a couple of years with the addition of D'arcy or something hoping that THAT will be the key? Will he accept his place as a marginal musician doing small acoustic shows? Will we ever see the moniker The Smashing Pumpkins being used again? Last edited by cardiac : 02-22-2018 at 07:19 AM. |

When the Pixies did this didn’t they lead into it with a new Greatest Hits and Bam Thwok!?
So you get the old audience and a new audience who have a fresh GH collection as a starting point. A Greatest Hits with Siamese Dream acoustic bonus disc (use the latest photos of the girls as a cover)... that would’ve been a smart marketing strategy to then announce a reunion tour. |

The way Livenation are promoting this is like 2007 - 2017 didn't happen. There's been no mention of previous incarnations / tours / albums, so this is like a "legendary" band reforming after 20 years.
That level of promo will help sell the tickets. They may not sell out all the venues, but they'll keep pushing. Livenation are very powerful, so they'll plug and plug and push and push. They are the ones that will lose out, as they've paid the Pumpkins their fee and now need to make it back on the sales. If they announce a UK / Europe tour, that'll do very well. I can see them selling out 2 nights in the Brixton Academy, or a night in the 3 Arena in Dublin (that being the same site as the Point concert in 1996 where a fan died). If the whole thing goes tits up and tickets don't sell, well that's the fault of Livenation and not the band. What will help is some new tunes, and especially tunes that sound like old SP. Billy's gonna need to do something about his vocals though, and he's going to have to lose some weight - not body shaming; he's just going to need to be fit and healthy to get through the tour. Plus nostalgic fans will want to see people they more or less recognise - James looks good, Jimmy looks the same as he always did. No one knows nor cares about Jeff. D'arcy? She could help sell tickets. Saying that, the 90s D'arcy could help sell tickets. God knows what D'arcy today would do - help or hindrance? No one really knows what she looks like now, beside the few blurry photos we have. Personally I don't care, but the casual fan might react in a negative way to someone looking so different to what they remember. |

Pretty sure BC had to have financed this whole thing himself and is banking on making a return and profit in the long run. He probably dropped a few million out of pocket on promo push.

Not behaving like a boy; as I said, I personally don't care what she looks like. I would like to see her in the band. I also commented on how James, Billy, and Jimmy looked.
I'm talking about casual fans, those who DO react to that kind of thing. And what they might think of D'arcy now, vs how they remember her from the videos and album sleeves. And potential negative reaction on social media. Re the Machina reissue; that'll please fans but it's not going to get punters to buy tickets. A re-release of a unpopular album isn't going to do it. |

My gut tells me this tour is gonna do well.. As has been stated .. 2007-2017 didn't happen.. I have friends who couldn't have cared less about the pumpkins during that run, but will see them on the upcoming tour. The livenation push feels real.

If being a lesbian meant I have to reduce every single woman down to their looks in every conversation i'd probably put a bullet in my head.

Considering Billy said it's not worth playing club shows for "core fans", I'd say he'd end SP if this tour doesn't pan out.
