Default I'm making my friend a playlist - What are the best Smashing Pumpkins live jams

I'm including music from all eras

I'd like a pre 2000 silverfuck or two, preferably in different styles. I'd like a passable Superchrist, and a Heavy Metal Machine would be cool. I'd like Gossamer, one of the longer ones (If All Goes Wrong maybe) and one of the tighter ones, and one of those March Hare/Sound of Silence jams. Any recommendations?

The Ruby outro jam is one of the best things the band's ever done

And the studio outro is incredible too, but in a fundamentally opposite way

TAN:

does anyone remember those off-kilter disembodied version of siva during the 96 tour when billy and james would fuck around and trade solos and challenge themselves?

if it wasn't siva it was i am one, i can't remember for sure. they would extend the song to almost 20 min.

i'm thinking specifically of the version from the vieuphoria 2 fan-made comp from forever ago

Those "Siva" performances were awesome in the most literal sense of the word. Even with Jimmy gone, the band played at their best in late 1996/early 1997. There is a particularly great one (and widely available) from Vancouver on 01/08/1997. Listening to these performances is example A-1 of why Billy sounded much better playing with James than Jeff.

As for jams for your friend, I'd recommend the "Gossamer" performances from the 20th Anniversary tour. Those versions of the song were much more developed than the ones they played in May/June 2007 (when the band started playing live again) but not as cumbersome and wanky as the ones from the residencies.

Jan 8, 1997 has an epic Porcelina/Rocket combo, Ruby, Siva, and Silverfuck. The Cherub Rock from that date also has a wicked ending.

Also, October 19, 1997 Porcelina with John Popper. Maybe one of the Transmission performances.

Pale scales and Rock On are not really jams, but they evolved and shifted between performances, and that's kinda jamy. Maybe check out 1999, Dec 20, for Pale Scales.
