Ouch. Saw them last summer or fall, and they were great. A truly amazing experience.

Agreed, I make it a point to check them whenever I can. The show's been rescheduled for the 24th, which I'd rather go up to Chicago on a Friday rather than a Sunday. Tombs will still be playing with them, which should be awesome.

they are that band whose poor drummer got fucking railed by pitchfork.

Pitchfork: Pelican: City of Echoes

That's it: Fire the drummer. Though it's a problematic if long-standing complaint, Pelican drummer Larry Herweg has consistently prevented his Chicago-based instrumental four-piece from being as transcendent as they've long been touted. On their third album, City of Echoes, it's worse than it's ever been, largely because it now seems that the excellent and consistently developing guitar duo of ******t Schroeder-Lebec and Trevor de Brauw are better than they've ever been. The compositions and performances have become more subtle and complex and, here, are occasionally as powerful as those early Pelican moments, when a young, passionate band would grind a handful of chords into fine, red-hot dust. But Herweg, unlike his flanking guitarists and even his bassist brother Bryan, hasn't progressed beyond his role of generally beating things hard and misguiding the upswing of a song by botching fills and missing beats. On City of Echoes, he muddles some of the album's most otherwise-transcendent moments, the album's approach of more density and less repetition giving him more opportunities for failure than ever before. Plenty of them are requited

I agree that he might not be the best drummer out there, but who the fuck cares what Pitchfork people think?
He's not as bad as they make him out to be, and City of Echoes is actually a more than decent album.

Yea, this review was lame. He may be an inconsistent drummer, but I think he blew it completely out of proportion. I love City of Echoes anyway.

I saw them open for Circa Survive last fall. The whole show was riddled with technical problems which pretty much ruined the experience for the audience and for the band, who seemed (justifiably) pissed off at the sound guys. City of Echoes was a strong album, I'd really like to get the chance to see them again now that I'm a little more familiar with the material. Hopefully not at the Palladium, that place sucks it.

They played new stuff, it was awesome as usual. Probably the best set I've seen by them.
