Should Billy Resurrect Zwan?
I was all for Billy bringing back the Pumpkins. It's his band. It was always him and Jimmy at the core. Both he and Jimmy are virtuosos at their craft, but in light of recent music I'm feeling hipsters like James, D'arcy, and Nicole keep him grounded a little because they have a certain sense of what is cool. It seems to be all Billy (even more so and including production) and there is nobody to rein him in.
With what happened with Mikey and Nicole, it seems there is no intent to try to make it a band. This leads me to believe some of the haters in that the original SP is sacred. So what if SP just got shelved to be admired for the ages? I really think this would free Billy up. I think Zwan should come back, not as a band, but as a project. It should be a revolving door like QOTSA or the New Pornographers (maybe they're more of a collective?). He should just hire the guns he needs for a particular sound. Maybe one album has a horn section, maybe one album is with Geddy Lee, Shredder, and some prog drummer. Imagine a Them Crooked Vultures scenario with Corgan, Homme, Chamberlin, and Les Claypool. That would be expensive to pull off, but you see what I'm getting at. |

Really more of an artistic rebrand. The SP brand feels fractured.

"It should be a revolving door"
Is one band with a revolving door not enough?? |

Haha! I know, right? Super uncool. Terrible guitarist. Lame band. Anyhow - Billy said in an interview that he might take the Josh Homme/QOTSA approach so why not do it with a band/brand that doesn't have a platinum legacy?

billy, jeff and guest tommy lee on drums would be great for a zwan reunion.

It is completely relevant especially with the response to the latest song. I battled James and D'arcy lovers on this very forum after they wanted Billy to give up because the band wasn't the same without those two. I feel it is SP as long as Billy and Jimmy are in it. This is not the mighty SP without Jimmy Chamberlin. It's a vast collection of unfinished Billy demos.

Exactly. It would make more sense than SP. Zwan was brilliant but it was because Billy and Jimmy made music that wasn't quite SP music. I don't think Pajo and Sweeney had much to do with the sound. Paz on the other hand had great vocals and was the most talented and melodic bassist Billy has worked with to date.

Yeah, I guess. In retrospect, SP should have been shelved after the final show only to resurface for the reissues. Everything since should have been an incarnation of Zwan. THEN a reunion tour for SP would have serious weight. If it ever happens now (haha) it would seem like a transparent money-grab. Zwan could ebb and flow and do whatever without messing with SP. They could also play SP music (unlike Zwan in 2003). A Billy-led supergroup playing SP songs would be cooler than what is happening now.

Jimmy defined SP, but barely contributed anything to Zwan & even less to Djali Zwan.

Billy should resurrect Zwan as his main vehicle, & cover sp when he's in the mood. Ravinia style.

Why? Seriously. It would be essentially what is happening now except Tommy Lee wouldn't be filling Chamberlin's role in the Smashing Pumpkins. He would be the drummer for the latest Zwan incarnation.
I still dig what Billy is doing but "Pinwheels" and "Being Beige" can't really hang in the SP discography. |

i don't really see the point, zwan kind of stands for this failed supergroup kind of thing, or at least one that ended horribly
it would just be kind of ridiculous to resurrect that particular name as the "current corgan brand" or whatever when sp is at the very least going to get him the more attention this is basically a "semantics argument" by this point since it's callin a rose a rose or a piece of shit a piece of shit, if you didn't like Being Beige by The Smashing Pumpkins you're probably not going to like Being Beige by Zwan the one thing i have pushed for though is BC doing more of that Ravinia kind of stuff with a rock band of some kind maybe, a more consistent one, but he's definitely in practical solo artist territory by this point... time to do more of a david bowie thing than try and constantly fight for the past i think |

"Zwan" is not a band name that would get much interest. The market value of "Smashing Pumpkins" is x times higher.
Do you think "hey yo a new Zwan album" would work in 2015? That band name was never well known. Edit: Mals Marola covered that. |

I agree. I'm kind of going round 'n round here, but I think if Zwan was reintroduced with another killer line-up and delivered as a one-time album and tour it would get a better critical reception and generate more buzz outside of the SP community.

Zwan didn't create a buzz outside SP fans the first time around.

it did what it could in 2001-03 or whatever but considering the main appeal of that one seemed to be "billy and jimmy... with other people!" that's kinda beyond redundant now, and not even with the jimmy part

They're doing the "whatever" live line-up for the next festival gigs 2015 anyway.
Smashing Pumpkins is a brand name, without it I don't see how they'd sell tickets. "Billy Corgan & Jeff Schroeder" could play at 3pm at a festival side stage. As nice as the idea is to use his own name - that's fucking yourself in the knee financially. Didn't even sell out a venue like Ravinia. |

Doesn't matter what the name is if the music is shit. I vote they call themselves Peeholes and the Shoelickers. A good album is a good album and Billy hasn't made a good album since Adore.
Now Zwan had a lot of good stuff, and the Chicago Kid stuff was pretty good too, but none of it has translated well to record. |
