ALD- Assisted Listening Device (devices meant for the deaf/hard of hearing)

IEM- Inner Ear Monitor (those earpieces you see used by many artists to better hear what's going on on-stage)

Don't some IEM's have band chatter (not meant for the audience to hear) present in them? I can see Bill not wanting his onstage chatter about that freaky Mormon guy with a camcorder in one hand and a boner in the other getting out to the public.

I guess I'll jump into the pool here.

I'd like to know how you've stored your Machina 2 vinyl since getting it and if you ever sold it, what you feel would be a fair market price for it.

Hope you are doing well!

Thanks

Shawn

There is a well known SP taper that has made many IEM recording, though I'm unaware whether or not he's done any SP2. He doesn't share them with anyone at all, for fear of being found out and/or arrested, which has apparently happened to people in other band communities. I did get a brief listen once - interesting stuff.

I remember when I was a little boy my grandpa had weirdo hillbilly satellite and would watch football games where you could here what was being said on field by the players. Definitely interesting stuff.

I have to respect the man's request. I'll tell what I can....

Apparently, one can purchase an IEM receiver that can scan the airwaves, like an AM/FM dial, and tune in to a band member's feed. You have to be close to the venue - I want to say within a half mile of the signal. It is best to show up early so you can catch the band's soundcheck to determine the band members' frequencies and find out which one is the best mix as each band member has a different mix, according to their preferences. Then you just record the feed as the concert happens. The down side is that, like the radar detector detectors that cops use, there are apparently IEM receiver detector detectors, which can be employed to bust someone at a show. So, being within the venue is not advisable.

Realize that all of this information was revealed to me 5+ years ago, so it's accuracy in modern times may be wrong.

My questions would be:
- Are the mixes strange in each frequency (i.e. just what that band member needs to hear)?
- Did this guy say he got a lot of chatter? I don't know how chatter would show up unless there's a separate mic for it?

They can be mixed to whatever spec the performer desires, really. That's my understanding.

So, in an attempt to bring the thread back on topic, the questions we have so far for Dave are as follows:

- What's the find you're most proud of?

- I seem to remember mention years ago (possibly via AMSP) of an uncirculated tape of demos that included an acoustic version of The Vigil. Did you ever find out any more info about this/track it down?

- Did you leak QAOS?

- Any more known information about the rumored "Machina Rehearsals" demo tape? Are the machina rehearsals, if they exist, the same as the blackbird studios sessions?

- Tell us about that Marked video you supposedly have. You know, the one that clips of are shown in Vieuphoria.

- What is the full story behind you knowing the band?

- How have you stored your Machina 2 vinyl since getting it? Have you sold it, and what you feel would be a fair market price for it?

Frank was taping Dave Matthews this way from his car outside the venue, but that was around 2002.

The mixes by themselves don't sound strange persay, they're usually just heavy on that band members instrument. Good example was an IEM recording of Pearl Jam when they opened for U2. The feed picked up was Eddie's and its almost entirely vocals plus a metronome that played throughout the recording to keep him in time. The taper then mixed it with an audience recording (edited out the metronome) and the sound was very nice! I also have a Cure recording, don't know who's IEM it was, but Roger (the synth / keyboards player) is almost entirely gone from the mix since apparently the band didn't get along with him at the time. So I guess IEMs can reveal things about bands they don't want the public to know!

Does the U2 portion of this exist?

I'm sure it does, I'm not a big U2 fan. 2006-12-09 is the date. I'm pretty sure U2 was the main act

I know, I have most of them from that tour, but none from Vertigo. The Hawaii show with Pearl Jam was awesome too.

I once taped the IEM feed of a U2 show in Munich with a borrowed IEM receiver and it came out crappy. It sounds totally thin and hissy (although I was inside the venue). I never tried IEM taping again.
