Yeah, it is the truth. SP and Nirvana were the two biggest bands in the world at that time. Plus I don't see him as being an ass in this at all. He had some very nice things to say about Kurt.

Achtung Baby was 91. They were big but not nearly as big as SP and Nirvana in 94-95. Both Pop and Zooropa were seen as disappointing.

Maybe it's because I am stuck in middle America, but I have never actually met a U2 fan. I have went through the album collections of hundreds of friends, family and strangers and I can't recall ever even seeing a single album. As far as the Pumpkins as concerned I'd say 94-97 they were untouchable.

He doesn't have to state it!

It's up to us to say and for him to be a humble gushing fuckhead so then we can be all like, "aaaaaaw he's so cuuuuuuute!" And then he sells more records because people love how "grounded" he is...!

Plus, isn't there some famous quote that talks about keeping your ego in check and let others decide if you're good or not?

Wasn't Bono quoted saying that The Smashing Pumpkins were the biggest band in the world? They've played Bullet live a lot as well.

That interview is classic Billy. Especially the comments on Eddie Vedder.

Quote:
Corgan, whose on-off (now very off) relationship with Courtney Love preceded Kurt Cobain’s, was there for all grunge’s grubby glory years, which Cobain’s 1994 suicide ended. Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder once told me he felt survivor’s guilt afterwards.

That would be Eddie Vedder,” Corgan snorts. “Somehow he makes it about him even when it’s about somebody else! I had a much more personal perspective, because I’d been in contact with Courtney through a lot of the setting up of that period, and afterwards.

It's cute that he thinks he ever spoke for a generation more than The Downward a Spiral did.

OK Corgan

let's make things clear.

Guns N Roses were the biggest band on the planet 91-93,
However, top 3 were undoubtly Guns N Roses, Nirvana and Metallica.

Followed by U2, Bon Jovi and Pearl Jam.

Everything else is use your illusion.

Odd, U2 biggest album EVER couldn't place them among top 3, yet they sold just as much then and are the biggest band now 20 years later that they hadn't recorded a decent record.

Today was a hit, but Pumpkins couldn't sell out an Arena even US before MCIS.
Check size venues they played before and after MCIS.

In Europe they played aftrenoon shows on mediocre fetivals until 1996.

I don't think popularity/sales is what he was speaking to. It was more raw songwriting capabilities and delivering music that was beyond the boxed songs of that era. And I have to agree...even though I can see how it could come off a bit conceited. But what can we expect from Billy! It's similar circumstance as Pink Floyd and Zeppelin back in the day.

U2 was huge in 1992-1993. Arguably bigger than anyone else. Zoo TV tour earned more money than anyone else's tour at the time and that's a fact, you can look it up.

Thing is though, i also came from a remote area and finding U2 fans then was hard. But eveyrbody had a GNR and Metallica t-shirt. But people would look at me weird with my U2 records... it was bizarro world. I felt how can U2 be so huge when i know NO ONE who listens to them. U2 was too GAY for the boonies

Also, probably the demographics for U2 fans was a bit older than HS, they'd been around a while already

GnR was history after 93

Kurt was dead by April 94. For all but a handful of fans Nirvana existed for 3 years.

u2 kept putting out albums and doing worldwide tours straight through the 90s.

saying they're the "biggest band in the world" isn't just about album sales in 91. And it doesn't say their product is any good. (I can't stand much of what they recorded after 91).

They have more fans, sell more tickets and over the long term have sold more albums than all of the other bands that existed in the 90s.

but i guess Corgan and Cobain spoke more to Gen X than U2. Especially sicne by 1991 U2's lyrical content had started being more lightweight. though i suppose it fit with the more personal topics of grunge lyrics but Bono had been a rock star a while, he wasn't as relatable.

Also their shows worked so well in great part because they were spectacles, it didn't matter if you were only ambivalent about U2, or just casually liked them, you might still want to go see their shows.

This is an issue for me. See, I'm not good with the new fangled widgets above. I just recently found out how to upload pics on here without having people click the links. Give me time...
