Default Rank NIN albums/EPs

1.) The Fragile
2.) Year Zero
3.) The Downward Spiral
4.) Bad Witch
5.) Not the Actual Events
6.) Broken
7.) The Slip
8.) Pretty Hate Machine
9.) Hesitation Marks
10.) Add Violence
11.) With Teeth

I don’t count Ghosts because it’s soundtrack work and not like anything else in the discography. Same goes for Still.

They're all amazing except: Bad Witch, Add Violence, and With Teeth.

Downward Spiral is basically a perfect album.

Hey OP: If you count the last couple EPs but not broken you're an irreparably stupid piece of shit.

Anyway here's the NIN releases that count, ranked in the only correct order:

1. Pretty Hate Machine
2. Broken
3. The Downward Spiral
4. The Fragile
5. And All That Could Have Been
6. With Teeth
7. Further Down The Spiral
8. Year Zero
9. Fixed
10. Ghosts

Fun fact: no band from the 90s will ever top 'Gave Up' as a single tune

I wish I knew where the first beat was supposed to be in the verses of Survivalism though.

That’s the worst song on the album though (sans Pinion/Hell)

Also, PHM is great for the time and era and zeitgeist of the moment, but other than a few classic tracks, aged beyond terrible

I also do not understand why the trilogy isn’t universally *raved* about. Critically the trilogy is the best stuff Trent’s ever put out, but the fans seem split. It’s noisy and angry with screaming, very industrial, nostalgic, weighty with concept, cryptic artwork and themes, but also has lots of live instruments.

The songs are rock solid, She’s Gone Away, Burning Bright, Less Than, Not Anymore, Background World, Shit Mirror, Ahead of Ourselves, Play the Goddamn Part, Over and Out...

I think aggressive and challenging music isn’t for the older part of NIN’s fanbase anymore

i don't know i've heard quite a bit of good things about the newest 3 releases, i haven't heard Bad Witch yet but of the two EP's i definitely gravitated more toward AV

in any case, i must be the only person in this thread to actually like WithaTeetha!

Bad Witch is really funky, Add Violence is like...pop mixed with noise, NTAE is just really gloomy and dense. They all have their own identity which is why I don’t want to lump them together even though Trent says they’re meant to go together

I like parts of WT, but the lyrics are so fucking bad on that album

And I know Trent’s lyrics have never been amazing but there is usually a sense of mystique and intrigue in his lyrics but they’re so banal on the album...”I am a good boy and I want to swallow it all SWALLOW IT ALL SWALLOW IT ALL” is cringey. It also lacks a lot of soundscapes and Trent admitted he wanted to make it more pop friendly.

But it also has some golden songs like All the Love in the World, and the last four songs which are fucking epic. I mean it’s still a 6/10 for me, I just don’t ever listen to it

I have a weird view on NIN since much of the albums don’t hold nostalgia for me, I was raised with it, and it’s always been a presence in my life so I have a fairly objective view of his work, IMO. Each album has a different spot in my life because I was always exposed to the new albums through my family. I didn’t even like The Fragile for most of my younger life. Year Zero used to be my number 1, because nothing sounded like it to my ears as a 17 year old

Objectively, I’d say Fragile/YZ/Spiral are all the most ambitious albums and all pretty equal masterpieces

yeah i mean, i realize i have it last on my short list but i've always found it really compulsively listenable - also i really love the "Trent doing Oasis" thing he has going on on "Every Day"

that might just be me tho

I mean it is easy to listen to, for sure. Every Day is not a bad song either. I don’t like a lot of the bullshit ones like You Know What You are?, collector, getting smaller etc

As for the list:
1 Broken
2 Pretty Hate Machine ( Fav: Kinda I want to)
3 The Downward Spiral(Fav: Ruiner)
4 The Fragile(Fav: No you don't)

After that I don't know how to rank the rest I'm obviously more of fan of the old school though, I still feel like I'm going to hell just for listening to Heresy though

I truly don’t think there is an album with as much visceral anger as Broken

Help Me I Am in Hell is absolute masterwork and probably one of his best songs ever. Wtf are you talking about.

God when they busted it out live I about peed myself with glee.
