for the record yes i do think it should be legal for a man on LSD to have his legs amputated and his comatose husband's brain implanted into the skull of a gorilla and to then marry the reanimated gorilla-husband and then spit roast the legs and serve them up at the wedding reception and then sell videos of the whole thing on ebay

i guess animal rapists would be all like well that turtle nodded at me and it would be in florida as these things are, and a jury of window-lickers would say that turtle totally said yes and then a man gets married to a cooter

I'm still not totally and completely sold on legalizing polygamy. It's inherently misogynistic and preys on the ignorant. I think.

Also the legal issues involved with dissolving parts of a polygamous marriage give me headaches just thinking about them.

polygamy is not inherently misogynistic although I see where you are coming from. Marriage, in that sense, is also inherently misogynistic

marriage is a legally binding contract. adults should be allowed to enter into legally binding contracts. If 3 men and 2 women want to commit to sleeping with each other and sharing a house then the government shouldn't stand in their way.

i pretty much agree, polygamy should be legal. the question is: are polygamous relationships inherently exploitative? Really, isn't that the question for all of these?

humor me:

are marriages to children inherently exploitative? well, DUH

are marriages to animals inherently exploitative? yes, animals have no cognitive ability to understand marriage (among other things)

are marriages to inanimate objects inherently exploitative? nope, no consciousness to exploit

are marriages between gay people inherently exploitative? nope, two adults

are marriages with multiple partners inherently exploitative? not inherently

the end.

if they legalized human-animal marriage, then EVERY apartment would have to allow cats and dogs.

there are a few high profile cases like the FLDS cult in texas, but it's not inherently explotative. at least not any more than "traditional" marriage. the phrase "sister wife" i find creepy though.

I never commented on their consciousness. I said they don't have the cognitive ability to understand marriage. I'm not assuming they do just because I said inanimate objects don't.

logically, it was implicit

if furniture doesn't have consciousness so it's fine to marry, then anything that isn't fine must have some degree of consciousness in order to warrant consideration on the basis of other criteria

well

marrying furniture
1. is not inherently exploitative
a. because it doesnt have consciousness

2. is inherenetly exploitative
a. may or may not have consciousness
b. cannot understand or agree to marriage

if they do, then you need to go to b. but if they don't, you can stop there. maybe i don't understand, but i don't think what i said implied consciousness.

I'm gonna say no to marrying furniture because the furniture doesn't really have a say in the matter. It's like dividing by zero.

It seems pretty obvious to me that you can only marry something that can legally consent.

every time i get pissed at my old lady i tell her she's lucky we don't live in India where I could throw acid in her face or light her on fire.

the amount of privilege that we lose every day to these people is infuriating!
