So - R.E.M. is done...
http://remhq.com/news_story.php?id=1446
While this news obviously saddens me - it didn't really shock me. Their decision to not tour under "Collapse Into Now" struck me as odd at the time, but I just assumed that they'd tour under the next. Now there's not a next. Not even a string of final shows - just DONE. Glad I made the trek to see them at Red Rocks in 2008 - between them, The National and Modest Mouse opening, it really was a no brainer. They were at the top of their game on that tour - weaving songs from all eras of the band into a tight as hell setlist with each of them sounding spot on. That show lodged itself into my top 5 of all time list. Great band - sad to see them go, but as Michael says on that site - 'the skill in attending a party is knowing when it's time to leave.' |

Yeah i was surprised and saddened they decided to call it quits. Collapse Into Now is a nice final record though. Great band. Although they never managed to scale the heights of New Adventures in Hi-Fi as a post-Berry threesome they still managed to put out four very strong albums, plus of course the awful Around the Sun.

Blearghhh... for the first time, I have the opportunity to do the traditional Netphoria [insert person/place/thing here] FUCKING DEAD thread and I blow it. Damn.
That said - you're right, Collapse Into Now is a good note to end on. Only beef with that album is that Ed is PREPOSTEROUSLY low in the mix on "It Happened Today". |

Similar to U2, it's been nearly two decades since they've put out anything truly groundbreaking.

This sucks, I expected this band to continue making music until they died.
Collapse Into Now is really bad though, especially in the shadow of Accelerate. |

In honor of their death, I was going to do what ilikeplanets did and listen to the entire REM discography.
I made it through half of Reckoning before falling asleep. |

you realize all the e6 bands you worship and rip off are just taking pages out of the R.E.M. playbook, right?

soniclovenoize just hasn't seen the light. I used to hate R.E.M., all throughout my teenage years. I thought they were pretty much the most annoying band in the world. Then suddenly it clicked and I realized how amazing they are. Probably one of the two or three most seminal bands in the shaping of alternative rock.

I just tripped acid and listened to the first 5 albums as it started tapering off....GUESS THAT'S AS CLOSE AS I'LL GET TO SEEING THEM!!
Man this sucks....Michael Stipe is so adorable though. I hope we get a reunion tour but these guys are looking haggard... |

This is actually pretty depressing. Can't believe I missed seeing them when they came with the National and Modest Mouse a few years back.

I saw them live in 05, Around the Sun tour I think. Nice show. Stipe wore the local soccer team's t-shirt throughout the second half of the show, which drove everyone crazy. But it really doesn't bother me because from that album onwards they have produced the most forced and uninspired albums in their whole career. Reveal was showing cases of overproduced shittiness but it had some great songs. And I see Up as the underdog album... I've come to love that album over the years.
Anyways, best R.E.M. ever is obviously 82-92. A non-overthought/overproduced Reveal would have made a great goodbye too. |

I was sad when I read about it yesterday, but like others not really surprised. So very glad I got to see them a handful of times over the years, and their last tour in 2008 was pretty fantastic. They were one of the first bands other than the Pumpkins that I totally fell in love with as a teenager.
Also, Michael Stipe is still pretty. |
