Solo Morrissey's music is either lame or trying to pretend he's still surrounded by the same skilled musicians he was in the smiths. Like there's songs that are obviously just trying to ape the Smiths sound. You can't replicate what Marr and Rourke had going and it REALLY annoys me when some people try to say the Smiths was Morrissey.

yeah, no. if the smiths had continued as something without morrissey, then we could talk.

smiths were good but the dropped out at a good time. morrissey's made some pretty nice solo stuff, & i love electronic. you are the quarry is probably my personal favorite, but vauxhall & i's got some greeeat tracks on it

It's on the same level to me.

You're removing a major component of the sound Ian for JD and Marr for The Smiths and as a result creating straight pop songs.

Except in NO's case the bands remains the same.

But i don't know, ill confess i value the musicians more than the lyricist/singer in pretty much any band. Not saying it DOESN'T matter cause it sure does but it probably matters to me less.

the smiths is marr and morrissey as far as i'm concerned, the other two i'm like meh

I can see where the drummer could kinda have been anyone (not that i think drummers are always replaceable but Joyce was good for the band's style but probably not irreplaceably good). but I will stand and fight for Rourke's importance. Maybe not in every song but there's quite a few that would have been diminished by having had a less competent and unique bassist. This Charming man is probably the most glaring example. But also other obvious ones like How soon is now and Bigmouth (or girl afraid that mals posted). the fact remains Marr would come up with a riff and then get together with rourke, they'd figure the song out and then morrissey and joyce would complete it. that's what i read anyway. so the music was very much marr and rourke. Sure probably more Marr but not enoguh to claim all music is him. It's not like he wrote those basslines.

The first few Smiths songs were written entirely without the others from what I've read at least. Suffer Little Children and The Hand that Rocks the Cradle

its true for the early ones yes. they didn't even have a band then.

Regardless, i feel the basslines add to the songs most of them. Also its hard to even really know for sure cause different sides will tell different stories what with the royalties thing.

One thing is for sure, as long as everyone contributes even a bit, songwriting credits should be distributed equally. There's kind of a reason why U2 is still the same four members and it's not just cause they like each other so damn much. Well i mean, its easier to like each other for one if you're making the same amount of money on all songs and nobody has to fight for credit. Of course if your'e writing a part for someone and then they just come in and record them, fuck them, but if they're doing their line and they're doing more than just follow the root notes of the chords someone else wrote, gives them a fucking credit for fuck sake. Fuck egos, fair is fair.

I saw this video once when I was a teenager, it was amazing, but I couldn't get the artist name or title, which I finally did a few years later. Until then I kept asking friends about a song that kept repeating "The Bomb" but no one would know. Oh life without internet....
