I guess I was assuming the two statements are related? Hip-hop sounds better now, without all of that menace that used to bother me.

This is another thing that bothers me: when people abbreviate decades incorrectly.

The shortened form of "the 1980s" is "the '80s," not "the 80's."

The apostrophe stands in for the missing digits. Just like how it stands in for the missing letters in a contraction (e.g. the apostrophe standing in for n and o when cannot becomes can't).

It's a pluralized term, not a possessive term, so there's no need for an apostrophe before the s.

last week I had to explain to my boss that "plural" does not mean "possessive." She has apparently spent all 65 years of her life using the words interchangeably.
