Default WAKE UP!! REPUBLIKKKANS Rigging next elekkktion in their favor!

http://www.addictinginfo.org/2013/01...electoral-map/

Quote:
Of all the under-handed, sneaky operations, this is one of the worst. While the rest of the country watched Barack Obama get sworn in for a second term, Republicans in the Virginia legislature wormed a gerrymandering bill through the state senate. The bill will redistrict the state’s senate seats to favor…wait for it… the Republicans! Imagine that.

According to blogger Ben Tribbett, who updated the story several times on Facebook yesterday, this will cost the Democrats a seat in the State Senate if it stands. Current Democratic State Senator Creigh Deeds of the 25th district would end up in the very red 24th district, which is represented now by Emmet Hanger. The district(s) includes Augusta and Bath counties as well as parts of Charlottesville.

What makes this even more despicable is that Democratic Senator Henry Marsh was in Washington D.C. attending the inauguration. He was reached by phone and told about the trick, declining to comment until he came home. Had Marsh been present, the 20-19 vote would have been tied. Many posit that the tie would have been resolved by Lt. Governor Bill Bolling in the GOP’s favor anyway, but a spokesperson for Mr. Bolling tweeted that he would not have done so, saying that he “… has grave concerns…” about the bill. Reportedly, even Virginia governor Bob McDonnell is angry over the deceitful tactic. His spokesperson, Tucker Martin said that the governor was very surprised to learn of the vote and has not seen the bill, noting that redistricting was not on the governor’s agenda.

Blue Virginia blogger lowkell watched the live feed from the Virginia Senate chambers, reporting that Democratic Senators Saslaw and McEachin tried in vain to stop the procedure:

“After Ben’s first Facebook notice, I went to the live feed of the Virginia State Senate and watched as Sen. Saslaw, Sen. McEachin (“This is sneaky, this is underhanded, and it’s beneath the dignity of the Senate”), Sen. Marsden and Sen. Barker went ape**** on the Republicans for what they said was a totally underhanded, unconstitutional move that will utterly poison relations in the Virginia State Senate. The fact that Republicans pulled this underhanded maneuver while most people were focused on the inauguration and Democratic State Senator Marsh was out of town (for the inauguration) really says it all. Wow… Bizarrely, right after the coup, Sen. Deeds inexplicably started rambling on about a Confederate general (Stonewall Jackson) and how he loved “peaches,” “lemons,” and “women.” WTF?”

Daily Kos blogger David Waldman writes:

“Today, the Virginia Senate Republicans play all out constitutional hardball on the rules. And tomorrow, Republicans will be pleading with Democrats for a “go slow” approach, bipartisan compromise, or just shrieking “power grab!” when the U.S. Senate takes up filibuster reform. They’re pissing on your leg and telling you it’s raining, senators. Look alive.”

There has been some discussion of the state’s constitution allowing for redistricting every 10 years, in years ending in a one. Apparently, Tom DeLay addressed this many years ago, saying that while the federal Constitution does lay out a minimum time limit, it doesn’t say anything about redistricting more often than that. Though no current state Senators would lose their seats and a special election is not required right now, these new boundaries will be in play in 2015. Democrats will take this to court, bet on it.

This is how the Republicans held the House in the 2012 election despite losing the popular vote by over one million votes. This is how they cheat. They take gerrymandering districts to ridiculous heights to favor their candidates. They’re preparing to manipulate electoral votes where ever they can. They can’t win on the issues and they know it so they rig elections like a third world banana republic. It’s contemptible and unworthy of this great nation.

These types of shenanigans have been practiced by the DNC in California for the last 30 years, has addictinginfo researched and reported on any of that?

Bullshit. California has a fairly equitable process for Congressional districting. Mainly because of Prop 11 & 20

lol. You don't know shit about California politics.

It's basically been a one party rule state in the legislature for 30 years now. All Prop 20 really did was pass the redistricting to a 14 member panel that, because the Dems have owned Cali since Reagan left, curries favor to the Dems at every turn, cause that's how the DNC machine works in this state. The tentacles are everywhere and the chicanery of it is so entrenched people around here are accustomed to it all.

It's a joke really, a sad one. Just look at the state of this state and the debt issues pertaining to welfare programs. The gerrymandering the Dem's have done over the years have established the dysfunction of fiscal California. Period. There is no argument, the Dems have had their way in this state for a couple generations now.

TOC is a dipshit. California politics is a decade ahead of the country. It's not perfect but districts are NOT rigged anywhere close to the clusterfuck that exists in any of the "red" state. The truth is that minorities and urban voters in California don't like hate mongering, gun freaks who tell them they're perverts, or that they'll be deported, etc. etc. etc.

Why would the majority of Californians EVER vote for a republican?

I can't wait for the day when whites are a minority in Texas. Once that happens the republicans will have no chance at all of controlling any branch of the federal government. They should hope for their own sake that the people they shit on today have short memories when it's payback time.

You have no ability for objectivity which runs rampant with DNC shills who mistake their indoctrination for an education.

As an example, to use your logic, someone who can be deported can't vote anyway so why do they factor in to your thinking at all? (read, sentence above).

Dihydrogen monoxide is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and kills uncounted thousands of people every year. Most of these deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHMO, but the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide do not end there. Prolonged exposure to its solid form causes severe tissue damage. Symptoms of DHMO ingestion can ******* excessive sweating and urination, and possibly a bloated feeling, nausea, vomiting and body electrolyte imbalance. For those who have become dependent, DHMO withdrawal means certain death.

Dihydrogen monoxide:

* is also known as hydroxyl acid, and is the major component of acid rain.
* contributes to the "greenhouse effect."
* may cause severe burns.
* contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.
* accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.
* may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.
* has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.

Contamination Is Reaching Epidemic Proportions!
Quantities of dihydrogen monoxide have been found in almost every stream, lake, and reservoir in America today. But the pollution is global, and the contaminant has even been found in Antarctic ice. DHMO has caused millions of dollars of property damage in the midwest, and recently California.

Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:

* as an industrial solvent and coolant.
* in nuclear power plants.
* in the production of styrofoam.
* as a fire retardant.
* in many forms of cruel animal research.
* in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.
* as an additive in certain "junk-foods" and other food products.

Companies dump waste DHMO into rivers and the ocean, and nothing can be done to stop them because this practice is still legal. The impact on wildlife is extreme, and we cannot afford to ignore it any longer!

The Horror Must Be Stopped!
The American government has refused to ban the production, distribution, or use of this damaging chemical due to its "importance to the economic health of this nation." In fact, the navy and other military organizations are conducting experiments with DHMO, and designing multi-billion dollar devices to control and utilize it during warfare situations. Hundreds of military research facilities receive tons of it through a highly sophisticated underground distribution network. Many store large quantities for later use.

It's Not Too Late!

Act NOW to prevent further contamination. Find out more about this dangerous chemical. What you don't know can hurt you and others throughout the world.

Do away with any boundaries. Just use the numbers. Split the electoral vote as the popular vote is split. 60% to 40% in a 10 electoral vote state would be 6 and 4 and so on.

Gerrymander that.

Gerrymander that.
States each get to decide how they split their electoral votes. It would be nearly impossible to get all 50 to go to a % allocation. It's the State Legislatures that draw up congressional districts and determine how voting is conducted. Today all but two States are winner take all. If you split them the way that you mentioned for states that Obama won, but that are also controlled today by GOP Legislatures, Mitt Romney would be president today. There is no way in hell that solid Red states, which today award all of their electors to Republican candidates, are ever going to move to a proportional allocation system. And there's no way that solid Blue states like California or New York would move to proportional allocation. But we have a number of States today that are technically Blue, but controlled by republicans.

If you applied district electoral allocation to Michigan, for instance, where Obama beat Romney by 10%, Romney would have gotten 9 electoral Votes and Obama only 4. Because the GOP gerrymandered the congressional districts. Virginia, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Ohio, etc. are all in similar circumstances. They consistantly go for Dem candidates in statewide and national elections, but because of gerrymandering they are controlled at a State level by republicans.

What Virginia is doing is worse. They're radically gerrymandering the districts, AND tying electors to the popular vote total in those districts, then awarding additional electors to the candidate that wins the most districts.. which in almost certainly will be whomever the Republican candidate is.

it'll never happen. It would take an ammendment to the constitution. Which would require the States to get behind it. And there isn't a state in the south that would support it. Mountain states like Montana, Wyoming, etc wouldn't either, because it gives them disproportional representation AND they heavily favor republicans.

The electoral system, like allocation of senators, is rigged to favor the Slave states and states with small populations. since we're still fighting the mentality of the confederacy, it's unlikely that all those Red states would ever support a constitutional ammendment taking away their power.

i'm a democrat, but i'll admit that this practice goes both ways. Just this past year the Maryland General Assembly passed redistricting to add an extra democratic seat (which of course the Repubs yelled "gerrymander", and were able to get enough votes to put it up for referendum). Naturally, since we're solid blue here in MD, it passed. This is how the game is played. Kinda like Game of Thrones.

There is no coddling going on here. Small states deserve as much of a say as the largest ones.

That's why its called the United "States" of America and not the United People's Republic of America or whatever communist name you would prefer to give it. Maybe you should stop watching Modern Family reruns and go read some history about why your country is named what it is.

The Electoral College is in place for the very reason so that small states don't lose input into the Presidential election. We've already gotten to a point where the candidates only campaign in like 15 of the 50 states anyway.

They absolutely do fucking not. Why is a Wyoming voter's vote something like 80x more powerful than a CA voter's vote (i don't remember the exact stat but it is insane).

Small states don't deserve input in the presidential election because no one fucking lives there. The government is for people, not land masses. And I'm aware of idiotic dickwads who go on and on about federalism. They are all idiots like you.

The 15 states presidential candidates campaign in ******* Iowa and New Hampshire.

IT'S FUCKING NONSENSE.

And like I said, the existence of the Senate already gives small states a hugely disproportionate amount of power. It is dumb and counterproductive.

Well it's so states with smaller populations don't get bossed around by the big states so people can move to areas of like-minded individuals and make their own laws about booze or guns or cousin fucking. But yes, that model of government is antiquated in the US since we're no longer as similar to the EU as we were 200 years ago.
