three guitars playing the same rhythm chords is uneccesary. It’s not like they’re doing cool Radiohead stuff with each guitar doing something different.

I'd listen to Howard Stern interview a piece of celery. At least the celery wouldn't rant about about the deep state and chem trails.

yeah billy's vocals were weak on bullet. but i think it worked better that he didn't even sing the last "cage", rather than have it be totally inadequate.

obviously jeff/3 guitars isn't necessary but i kind of dig it. something different at least

Wasnt a cold. Man, wheres the spirit, the emotion, the fire??? Watch bullet 1995 on tv and you feel the rage and the lust.

I mean he damages his reputation with such boring performances. A cold is no excuse. He just plays the song but the heart is not in it. Same with solara. What a twat he became.

I just got around to listening to the interview yesterday.

I'm surprised no one is talking about how Billy said something along the lines regarding the D'arcy interview with Alternative Nation as being libelous and Stern said something like "Yeah, you just let her get away with that?" And Billy was all "NO! I didn't let her get away with it!"... At that moment I had visions of the Devi Ever incident. I bet Billy threatened D'arcy in every which way. It could be why we haven't seen her communicate with the media since.

Oh boy, he said that? I have a feeling a NDA was involved with the negotiations, because iirc, D’arcy had signed something just to be in discussions with rejoining the band for the tour.

Btw, shouldn’t Billy’s lawsuits be public record?

Yeah, Howard was asking him about that post where he had the intravenous setup hooked up his arms and he said "Well D'arcy is convinced you had a brain tumor, so I wasn't sure" And Billy said something like "yeah that's only 1 of the ton of libelous things that she said in that interview" and then that's when the exchange took place.

It was quite the juicy moment, I'm surprised it didn't create any speculation around here of all places.

SMASHING PUMPKINS ON WHAT IT TOOK TO GET THE BAND BACK TOGETHER: ‘WE’RE HERE BECAUSE WE WANT TO PLAY’
FRONTMAN BILLY CORGAN ALSO TELLS HOWARD WHY LONE HOLDOUT D’ARCY WRETZKY DIDN’T RETURN
June 12, 2018

It was at an Asian fusion restaurant in Beverly Hills that bandmates and longtime friends Billy Corgan and James Iha decided to finally bury the hatchet between them after not speaking to each other for over 17 years. Their meal marked the first step toward getting the Smashing Pumpkins back where they belonged – making music with one another in a recording studio again.

“I didn’t know if this would ever happen,” James admitted to Howard on Tuesday. The current members of the Smashing Pumpkins all came into the Stern Show studio together ahead of their upcoming “Shiny and Oh So Bright” tour and just days after dropping their first new song “Solara.”

https://soundcloud.com/howardstern/s...idetomakemusic

Billy told Howard what it was like making new music with his band again after so much time had passed and recalled a moment he experienced while they were recording in the studio with famed producer Rick Rubin.

“I looked across the room at James … it was like looking through a tunnel back through all those years and I just was like, ‘I can’t believe we’re back in the same room and we’re making music. This is so cool,’” Billy said.

Whatever differences the Smashing Pumpkins had throughout their history, their music never caused any conflicts within the band. “We never really disagreed about music,” drummer Jimmy Chamberlin said. “As far as the music goes, I mean, we’ve always had a common ground.”

D'arcy Wretzky, the band’s original bass player, was absent from the Stern Show studio Tuesday morning, however, and will not be a part of the Smashing Pumpkins upcoming tour. Despite some of D’arcy’s recent claims, Billy told Howard he made every effort to convince her to come back to the band and that their early phone conversations were actually rather pleasant.

“Every time I talked to her on the phone she was absolutely lovely, she was sweet, she said things she’d never said to me,” Billy explained.

Since the Smashing Pumpkins’ catalogue includes so many challenging songs, Billy said he asked D’arcy if she still felt comfortable and capable of playing her parts. “I didn’t want to put her in a position where she looked bad,” Billy told Howard. According to Corgan, though, D’arcy brushed his questions off.

When it came time to discuss the business side of the reunion, D’arcy took issue with what was presented to her. “She just didn’t like the way it was going to be set up,” Billy continued. “I’m not here to talk about that, per se, but it wasn’t unfair. It wasn’t ridiculous.”

With a concert tour agreement at stake, the band made the difficult decision to move forward without D’arcy. “We all made that decision together,” Billy said. “The thing we know how to do is make music so we’re here because we want to play.”

In addition to making new music, Billy said the Smashing Pumpkins will be playing all of their hits on the upcoming tour in an effort to “refocus on that period” of their lives. On Tuesday, they treated the Stern Show audience to a live performance of “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” off of their 1995 chart-topping album “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.”

Billy also opened up to Howard about how his father supposedly became jealous about the Smashing Pumpkins’ early successes. “He was really, really weird about it,” Corgan said. After gifting his dad with the band’s first album “Gish” Corgan Sr. told his son it sounded like he “split a lot of hairs,” meaning he ripped off other artists in order to create his own music.

He delayed sending their second album “Siamese Dream” to his father for fear he’d again put down the band’s music. But instead, Billy’s dad had much more encouraging words for the now undeniable rock star. “He called me and said ‘I don’t know who you are … I don’t recognize the person that’s singing but it’s incredible,’” Billy told Howard. “What he was saying was ‘I didn’t know this person was in you … I didn’t know you were capable of this,’ basically.”

Billy made quite a few headlines after visiting the Stern Show in October and telling Howard about his experience with a shapeshifter. On Tuesday morning, he doubled down on that story again. “I know it happened. In fact, it happened twice,” he stated.

Though he did not want to divulge too much information, he was willing to share just a few new details about what he saw. “I will say, since we’re on radio, that the story is even more fantastical than you think,” Billy said with a smile. “The person was naked.”

Howard supposed that meant the shapeshifter was a woman Billy was romantically involved with, but the rock star refused to say one way or the other. All he could confirm was that this indeed happened.

“Maybe I had a hallucination, but I saw what I saw,” Billy maintained.

Aside from being floored by Billy’s shapeshifting adventures, Howard was equally thrilled to hear the Smashing Pumpkins play their new song “Solara” live in the studio. Billy admitted it wasn’t easy hitting his vocals this early in the morning but both Howard and Robin commended the band for rocking out just as hard today as when they first started out.

“If you play this song while you’re making love to your woman, she will shapeshift for you,” Billy joked.

Billy Corgan responds to D’Arcy Wretzky’s claims that he ‘has a brain tumour’

The frontman speaks out on her 'eccentricity' - and why she's no longer in Smashing Pumpkins

Billy Corgan has responded to former Smashing Pumpkins‘ bassist D’Arcy Wretzky’s claims that he has a ‘brain tumour’, as well as further discussing their deteriorating relationship.

The feud between Corgan and Wretzky has worsened throughout 2018, with the pair often coming to blows via interviews and online comments. Now, with the core of the original ‘classic’ Pumpkins’ line-up back on the road with Corgan, guitarist James Iha, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin joined by longtime collaborator Jeff Schroeder and touring bassist Jack Bates, the frontman has spoken out on why Wretzky is no longer part of the band.

Responding to an interview in which Wretzky said that Corgan was “insufferable” and claimed he “had a brain tumour”, Corgan told Howard Stern: “Yeah, that would fall under one of the 400 libellous and defamatory things she said that has no bearing in reality.”

Speaking of their breakdown in negotiations leading up to the band’s comeback, Corgan continued: “The simple version of the story, which is convoluted, but the simple version is I spent two years trying to build my relationship, much like James [Iha] and I had built our relationship, so music seemed to be possible because there was good dialogue.

“Every time I talked to her on the phone she was absolutely lovely, she was sweet, she said things she’d never said to me, she complimented me, she said, ‘You wrote so many amazing songs, and I’m so proud of you. It’s great, and I know you’re a great father.’ I’m dealing with somebody who seems to me to be the grown up version of what we are now, so I was thinking it was possible.”

He went on: “But every time I would address logical concerns, like, ‘You haven’t been on stage in 19 years, you haven’t been in public in 19 years, are you going to be okay with that?’ She would just kind of brush it off, and then when I would try and get in a room with her, because she only lives an hour and a half from where I live, I would say, ‘I’ll come up and visit you.’ It never would happen, so then you start getting kind of, ‘Okay, what is really happening here?’ When we first approached her on the business side: ‘This is going to be the framework, this is what it is probably going to look like.’ She refused.

“She just didn’t like the way it was going to be set up, and I’m not here to talk about that per say, but it wasn’t unfair, it wasn’t ridiculous.”

Corgan went on to describe how talks of her joining the reunion broke down as he was “unable to get her in a room” and assess her state of mind and physicality, arguing that he wanted to “make sure she’s protected in this situation”.

“She had severe anxiety stuff that she talked about, so I’m trying to kind of balance a set of forces here, and by the way, the biggest promoter in the world is like, ‘Let’s do a tour’,” said Corgan. “There is a reality, there is a date approaching, so she walked away, okay fine, so we start moving on. Then she changed her mind, and by then we had already kind of half moved on.

We weren’t even that far down the road, but essentially we already said yes, so now we’re dealing with an outlying personality, and she’s a very eccentric person, and I mean that in the best way, and now we have a reality and we’ve already signed on the bottom line.”

The frontman went on to say that too much time had passed in negotiations, and that they made the decision as a band to move on without her for the good of the Pumpkins as a whole. Speaking of whether or not she could re-join the band in the future, Corgan concluded: “You can look at that kind of stuff and say that doesn’t belong here. Maybe it will someday, I don’t think it will, because to me that ship has sailed.

“But the point is, we’re here because we love each other, and we really just want to make music. That’s the one thing we got right.”

2:57 ... the Bullet performance ... jimmy stammers on his 16th note snare accent, dropping the beat (he rushes it in a very non-musical way)

Wow. I expect this kind of shit from Billy but damn. In his defense though, it would be almost impossible for anyone to keep good time in that mess. I don’t think I could.

Also big fucking LOL at Billy claiming “this music is hard to play” and “I wanted to protect Darcy” from failing when he sang the first lines of “Solara” in the wrong key on Fallon, he can’t palm mute without raising the pitch of his power chords almost a full semitone, his voice is flat on high notes that aren’t even high (the Bb below middle C on “jooobbbbb” in Bullet), and his voice cracks every 8 seconds. Way to uphold those high standards dude.

This is me being a fucking geek again, but it was fun to see that shot of Jimmy clicking off the song on his rightmost rack tom. I've always wondered which drum's rim he hits for those (sorry)

Jimmy's snare sounds way better here than on the studio version.

His cymbal setup is way more full than we last saw it on the Manson tour. Throwback to the SD era.

Love the "Jellybelly" fill at 4:19

Overall the best out of the three versions we've heard. Both Iha and Chamberlin shined on this. Billy not so much (slightly better vox than either previous versions though); I didn't notice the bass or Jeff so whatever
