Bands that ripped off the Pumpkins sound
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Q0DOWZRksI
Nudeswirl, "F-Sharp". This thing was a single in 93. Play it backwards, and it says "I am one as you are three". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIVfwMAOrt8 Rust "Not Today" "We like the sound of "Siamese Dream", but our song is "Not Today", not "Today"!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bC85b66d0_Y Bush "Alien" (1994) It always make me laugh when people defend "Sixteen Stone", "hell no!, Bush were not a Nirvana ripoff!". Sure! They also copied Pearl Jam and the Pumpkins, big time (the intro...). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qx6UpOydkoY Dig "Believe" (1993) Something in the guitar attack. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxyJa94AKqA Dolly "Quand l'herbe nous dévore" (1997). Hey, we're french, always catching up late...We have a guitar player who jumps around on stage James style, and 10 seconds into the song, this our cross between "1979" and the last seconds of "Starla". |

Bif Naked played at a euro festival in 98, in the tv feature she talked about how stoked she was to play in the opening line-up for the Pumpkins because huge fan blabla.

Are you saying they intentionally did this?
The I Am One one is blatant, but the others just sound like good songs that are slightly similar to Pumpkins stuff. |

Silversun Pickups were at least heavily inspired by the Pumpkins' pianoforte sound, if not ripping it off directly. Fun fact: I really enjoy SSPU.

i like SSPU i think they've gotten better with each album. Didn't they deny even knowing about siamese dream? They use a lot of the same chords as billy used.
I don't think bush sounds like pumpkins. I remember people saying that feeder song sounded pumpinky. |

at some point people have to realize the difference between "inspired by" and "ripped off" and it's the difference between SSPU and the Bif Naked song in this thread.

Of course, some of these songs are intentional.
Billy Corgan sued Collective Soul because he felt that "Shine" was a ripoff of "Drown" I believe, and lost the case. https://ia600305.us.archive.org/32/i...-02t07_vbr.mp3 Listen at 6:20. I bet he had not heard Nudeswirl. If anything, "Shine" reminds me more of"Rhinoceros"... Thanks for Bif Naked, never heard this one before Bush did well in America, some other countries were always suspicious about them. They screamed "fake", totally contrived, they did grunge because that was the thing to do, they didn't go through the whole thing of playing lots of shows before getting signed etc. Interscope Records wanted its radio friendly band that would "play the game". They got Bush. And apparently they hesitated for a while between Bush and...this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94ssxU-RzrM Another band that came from nowhere. This song was used in a Levis commercial and was a big hit in Europe because of that. The funny thing is that Levis wanted to use "Today" but the Pumpkins refused. And the beat on this song is almost similar to the verses of "Today" - what a coincidence! (47 seconds into the song, this is..."In your House", the Cure). For Bush, I just meant that intro, not the rest... |

It's neither here nor there but I enjoy a lot of their songs. I like the abstract and seemingly nonsensical lyrics. Reminds me of the French surrealists in its approach, and I know Gavin read a lot of Rimbaud.

I read an SSPU interview were they said they really liked Gish but everything after was terrible and that they went downhill, especially mellon collie.
I still like Silversun Pickups though. |

Eh. i think bush just reminds of good times in school when i was younger. While they were an easy target I never really hated them. I actually saw them recently. kinda suck now that they lost that guitar player. let's be honest. billy has some pretty nonsensical lyrics. Even though there isn't much too them I can say i actually like the following bush songs. It's probably not a good thing when your singles are your best songs, but it is what it is.
glycerine little things comedown alien Mouth (remix on american werwolf in paris, solid flick btw) greedy fly swallowed letting the cables sleep also SSPU talks about pumpkins here and how they met billy corgan and he's been nothing but nice to them and his "best friend" is their bass player http://www.fuse.tv/videos/2012/10/vo...t-billy-corgan Last edited by wounded : 06-09-2014 at 11:05 PM. |

I think that Feeder song is the most famous instance of a band ripping off the Pumpkins because Billy called them out publicly in interviews at least once. I remember him saying something along the lines of look where I am today, and who the fuck knows who they are anymore because all they did was copy me.
Some of these are so blatant, I'm shocked. That I Am One rip SSPU never actually sounded that much like the Pumpkins to me when you listen past their aesthetic, although they obviously listened to a lot of SD back in the day or whatever. A lot of their Pumpkin-ness comes from Brian Aubert's (is that his name?) propensity for using sliding octave things with a single base note holding the riff together, which is one of the most defining things about Billy's rhythm style. Cherub Rock and 1979 both use this technique to name just a few. This probably makes people think Pumpkins more so than the fuzzy guitars and whiny vocals. I guess who cares though, I thought this band had a lot of potential to grow outside their influences but they kind of just sputtered out. |

they are (or at least used to be circa 2007-2009) really good live. They brought a LOT of energy and presence to the stage and jumped around like it was still the 90s

Not a ripoff by any means, but I'm sure they must have been into the Pumpkins. Some guitar tones are quite Pumpkin-like (Flood co-produced the album).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFV55VGvlY8 Those vocals... The guy sounds like a cross between early Brian Molko and Dolores of the Cranberries. Last edited by dodoz : 06-10-2014 at 02:21 PM. |

I know Elastica ripped off Connection but I don't care and love them anyway. Justine Frischmann had the heart of 13 year old Pizza Club

I met him a few years ago and he started geeking out about SP. His last band (Concerto for Constantine) also supported SP when they played in Dublin a few years back.... Oh and I remember learning JJ72 tabs when I was a student and was amused at how much the songs borrowed from SP (ie: 'Willow' and 'Stumbliene') etc |
