I can't be taken seriously with my degree but it was still vital in the development of my critical thinking skills and ability to navigate the world and consume information

A lot of it is educational inflation. Used to be that not everybody would get a high-school diploma, so that was all employer's really needed to look at. These days, everybody has one, so a degree has become the next arbitrary marker of value.

People are having a harder time getting employed straight out of university these days. You could have a STEM degree and still have to work at Gamestop for a little while until something opens up.

I personally think that university should be more about just learning stuff than being some sort of job training. If the goal is a job and making money, people learning trades are getting jobs much sooner than people with degrees, and will have to spend less time in education and have less debt to pay off.

Its a liberal capitalist cash cow that sucks on you & your family like a vampire and the only reason to go is to get instruction & permission from the powers that be so you can be a certain guy doing a certain thing.

liberal arts sadly not in demand, by anyone and i have by now forgotten all the history i learned replaced with new or relearned history i learned on my own goddamn self

I don't really know how people will look at my degree. On the one hand, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot it is applicable to. People seem to go into it before doing a law degree. Maybe it'd be good for public administration or public policy? People always ask me if I plan to go to Ottawa to become a politician, and I'm like "fuck no."

Whenever people ask me what I do and I say "political science," they go "wow." I think they think it's a really hard thing, because "politics" sounds serious and "science" sounds hard. Like, "oh shit, that sounds difficult and mind-numbing." Eh, it's probably no different from history or cultural anthropology or criminology or anything like that.

I have had this exact same thought before, if only so that everyone will have a little more empathy when dealing with retail workers and customer service instead of treating them like peasants.

anything dealing with customers generally sucks but making food can be really rewarding & its kind of annoying how college forever suburban types act like only stupid monkeys do this kind of work

except in benefits, making pizza shits all over every office job i've ever had

Oh.

I was going to say "EB Games," but I thought that maybe that's just a Canadian chain and most people here are yankies, so I tried to make what I thought would be the most relevant American example. I just knew that "Gamestop" is a place I heard of.

No, I'm not sure what would give the impression that I'm above retail work. I work retail. Thinking that most people don't particularly have a passion for working at a gaming store after a certain point in their lives is different from thinking that they are losers or something for having to do so.

I guess that's true.

I mean, if your passion is interpretive dance or something, then yeah, don't follow your passion in university (not shitting on the validity of interpretive dance, just saying that because society doesn't value it, you'll be in a bad place if you spend lots of money in pursuing it without a fallback). But if, amongst a range of normal degrees that won't make you starve, you like learning about one of them, pick that one.

Sometimes I talk to rich kids who never had to work a job as a kid because they got allowances and I'm like, shit, they are going to have to figure shit out at 26 that the rest of us learned at 14. If I were ever a parent well-off enough for his kids not to not have a financial need for a job, I'd make them get a job anyway. Like, I wouldn't be one of those weird white parents who make their kids start paying rent and buying their own groceries at age 18, but I would have them in charge of buying their own non-necessities like the rest of us do. Clothing, video games, whatever.

Maybe part of it is the difference between the U.S. and Canada (or, the difference between the U.S. and literally every modernized liberal democracy on the planet). We're far from socialist paradises where the schooling system doesn't fuck us over, but it at least wears a condom so that we don't have to take antiretrovirals for the rest of our lives. We take out student loans from the government rather than from private banks, and the interest rates are a lot lower. And there is room for some debt forgiveness for people below certain income thresholds.

I remember Blanket_Skies from the O-Board was an American who went to New Zealand for school to pursue film. It definitely makes sense to go to a less shit country that the U.S. to pursue education.

Have you and Elph hung out yet?

If not, you guys HAVE TO and then make an entry on Netphoria (with pictures included) about all of your adventures.

I mean, if some other top-dawg Netphoria lived out by me, I'd definitely go shoot the shit and have a few drinks with them.

Yeah, living together would probably not be a good idea.

I think it'd be cool if you hung out, though. It'd be that kind of comedic duo where one berates the other but deep down they've got nothing but love for each other.

there's really nothing rewarding about retail & that should have no bearing on a person's worth

besides retail is a dying industry, the people who can afford to shop for luxury & entertainment items do it online more and more often

i think your schools are much cheaper but we take out loans from govt also with protected rates they like to fight over but there's no debt forgiveness coming any time soon but the bubble gonna pop sometime. i'm literally banking on economic catastrophe to get out of this 30k loan that politically speaking i don't even believe in
