I started taking college courses at age 26 and it was honestly one of the best feelings I had. Makes sense that I only lasted two semesters before losing interest.

I still think about college and miss it... hanging out with fun people a lot, going to bars after class, poker mondays... good times.

I hated starting and I like it better now. I miss having the time to work on it. The rest of my life gives me anxiety and makes me procrastinate

i hate american college as an institution these days, hate

undeniably it gives people structure but its mostly gatekeeping the poor out of rich guy land & making a fortune off of young people's debt

Unfortunately it's very difficult to be taken srsly without a degree. At the very least everyone should, if needed, received financial help to obtain a 2 year degree.

Congrats on entering university, Elph! I hope you like it this time around. I definitely like university because I feel like I get to expose myself to a lot of different disciplines. But I'm kinda the kind of person who likes to dabble in a lot of things, so I take lots of electives and probably haven't taken as many courses in my major as a should (I feel like I know less about political science than my peers, and, to be honest, I probably lack basic knowledge that I should have at this point in my degree due to lack of interest).

I guess the takeaway is, make sure you try a lot of classes and major in something that interests you. It took me a while to realize that I'm probably not really enthusiastic about my major, but now it's too late to switch. I dunno, it's not awful, because I don't hate it, I suppose. I just enjoy reading about other shit more. Plus, if I ever go to grad school and get to pick my own areas of research, I can zone in on the parts of political science that do interest me (a few theories here and there that seem under-researched to me). A lot of the other stuff that interests me is more sociology and social-psychology, but I figure even without a degree in those things, having credentials in a social science will allow me to weasel my way into empirical studies on those things (when I read journal articles, I often notice that the departments of the authors aren't even from the discipline that the study contributes to, so I bet there's flexibility, especially amongst social sciences). Then, other stuff that interests me is analytic philosophy, which barely intersects with political science at all, but I dunno, all you have to be able to do to do that stuff is think and know about the debates you're entering into, so I figure people from all sorts of walks of life could contribute to it.

Also, make friends. I only started doing that this year, and it makes me kinda think about all the people I could have been friends with from previous years who made an effort to interact with me with whom I was too nervous to put much effort into reciprocating.

I can't be taken seriously with my degree but it was still vital in the development of my critical thinking skills and ability to navigate the world and consume information

A lot of it is educational inflation. Used to be that not everybody would get a high-school diploma, so that was all employer's really needed to look at. These days, everybody has one, so a degree has become the next arbitrary marker of value.

People are having a harder time getting employed straight out of university these days. You could have a STEM degree and still have to work at Gamestop for a little while until something opens up.

I personally think that university should be more about just learning stuff than being some sort of job training. If the goal is a job and making money, people learning trades are getting jobs much sooner than people with degrees, and will have to spend less time in education and have less debt to pay off.

don't listen to this guy he's clearly a career academic, if that's something that interests you by all means but college should be about knowing why you're there & following through as efficiently as possible

Its a liberal capitalist cash cow that sucks on you & your family like a vampire and the only reason to go is to get instruction & permission from the powers that be so you can be a certain guy doing a certain thing.

liberal arts sadly not in demand, by anyone and i have by now forgotten all the history i learned replaced with new or relearned history i learned on my own goddamn self

I don't really know how people will look at my degree. On the one hand, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot it is applicable to. People seem to go into it before doing a law degree. Maybe it'd be good for public administration or public policy? People always ask me if I plan to go to Ottawa to become a politician, and I'm like "fuck no."

Whenever people ask me what I do and I say "political science," they go "wow." I think they think it's a really hard thing, because "politics" sounds serious and "science" sounds hard. Like, "oh shit, that sounds difficult and mind-numbing." Eh, it's probably no different from history or cultural anthropology or criminology or anything like that.
