would you take:
a flight from newark to salt lake city that connects in houston that costs 300 and you can be upgraded to first class on the return flight for free. the houston connection adds like 3 hours.

a flight that costs 276 and connects in cincinatti on the way there but is direct on the way back

I would take this one. Nothing beats a direct flight.

but first class is nice. i've only flown it once and it was on a short flight to chicago

If you like first class that much, go for it. I personally wouldn't spend the extra money and time for first class.
