The album would be a great comedown after the bombast of MCIS, and a great record in general, if it was more acoustic and chill and less trying to hop on the goth bandwagon

Great song indeed, not easy to take something so "thin" and expand upon it with so much feeling.

He was obviously lost at the time. He wanted to do an acoustic record, that's why the original producer was hired for what was in 1997 Corgans "solo-record". But then he also saw the market value in the "dark-pop" that Manson and others were doing at the time, and thought himself genius enough to mix together everything into an idiosyncratic album that would fuse those elements.

It is a jewel of an album tho, but can be a bit dreary at times.

I don't think Billy was jumping on any sort of "goth bandwagon", that's ridiculous. His music always had that influence to begin with. There's plenty of goth elements on MCIS already.

He was trying to go with the 1979 hype and thought people would accept the change. Sometimes I think if he was a bit more positive about how the album was selling publicly tee fans reason would've been more positive as well.

He also should've gone Guns'n'Roses and released For Martha as a single, with an expensive video and everything.

I've never thought of crestfallen as a mom-song. I thought it was just a whiny girlfriend song...

never understood why it was made a single. might had made annie-dog a single. /// wait................, is annie dog a mom-song too? is annie dog about his mom? that's fuckd up. Is perfect is also about his mom? they're ALL songs about his mom? billy's more fucked up than even I had thought. what a fucked up dude.

There was no goth bandwagon in 1998; there was Marilyn Manson and a bunch of irritated Sisters of Mercy and Cure and Skinny Puppy fanbases who were swearing up and down his and Trent Reznor's music wasn't goth or industrial. And a bunch of shitty nu-metal bands with black nail polish. Different things.

Sonically it certainly doesn't derive much from anything 90's club kids would be listening to, and apart from the Joy Division cover it has little more in common with the post-punk stuff Bill used to like. His goth stuff was pre-gish.

Also stop shitting on it because Jimmy's not on it, fucking seriously man

This is one of the never ending SP conversations, apparently. Adore is what it is. It's the general vibe of the record that turned off people who loved Today, BWBW etc. No minor change in the tracklist would've changed that. It would've made them a drastically smaller presence in the mainstream compared to 93-97 no matter what. Had it been shorter, it might've gotten better reviews, but it would not have continued their chart success in any scenario.

Reminds me of how Radiohead fans speak of "Lift" as the long lost Radiohead single that would've made them the next U2 or whatever.
