Default You must pick ONE song.

Which SP song is your favorite?

You must pick one. Not two. Not 'it changes'. What is it right now?

I'm gonna go with Hummer.

hummer just has it all, really. and the ending really seals the deal. i used to have an mp3 with it looped and just listen to the last 3 mins or whatever of the song, you know exactly what i mean i'm sure

also the lyrics that really resonate with me so much, but especially this for some reason:

Happiness will make you wonder
Will I feel OK?
It scares the disenchanted
Far away

really all of the lyrics are amazing. how you have all this potential and all these expectations because you were born smart basically (projecting my case here), and realizing you dont have to be that person, shedding those expectations to be who you really want to be. really got to me as a teen and even now. and that happiness line, i feel is like learning to have some happiness, and not being scared about how you'll feel tomorrow and having that ruin feeling good right now. im not really very good at that still but i understand the want to be able to do it.

If this thread was best Pumpkins outro, Hummer wins no contest.

Everything you said. And it's musically so satisfying and emotional. And it speaks to me about how life's a bummer when you deny being who you want to be and what you are by holding yourself back. It's such a freeing song.

porcelina and starla tho. i guess maybe they are too impersonal for me. porcelina is like this painting almost, of this fantasy world. starla is almost nonsense lyrics until the bridge ('serve yourself') which is really nice. and of course the outro/solo thing is fantastic. but i feel like hummer, mayo, here is no why, and some others (not gonna bring up other songs that haven't been mentioned) really are personal thoughts from billy to us is a special way. i dunno i guess those types of feelings are what i most value in SP's music

IMO of course. and i fucking love porcelina

Gotta say "Thru the Eyes of Ruby."

The lyrics don't really have personal significance to me. I mean, they are meaningful to me and I think they are well-written and I like them, but it's not like, "oh yeah, I've been there before" or anything. But I don't think lyrics have to reflect my personal experience to be meaningful.

My interpretation of the song (which, I suppose, is as good as anyone's, seeing as it's pretty nebulous and not very direct, and Corgan writes nonsense lyrics all the time that end up having meaning by accident) is that it's about people not being in love with each other anymore, but pretending they still are regardless, because having something to cling to is easier than admitting the truth. Especially because they are getting older and are afraid of being alone.

I dunno, everything about the song is perfect. That music-box opening, followed by that arpeggiated section that rises into that explosive crescendo, which then subsides into that aquatic-sounding phased/flanged part before the vocals start. And that's just the intro. It's ballady and heavy at the same time, like a summary of the album, almost.

Seems to have a lot of references to missing the innocence of youth, which comes up a lot in the album. Meditating on nostalgia and wanting to be frozen in time ("Youth is wasted on the young" and "the night has come to hold us young"). Also, making empty gestures to try to recapture the sentiments of affection from youth, even though the feeling isn't there anymore ("And with this ring I play so dead").

And then there's that reprise of the opening track at the end, which kind of reinforces the "summary of the album" thing for me.

my sentiments exactly. This trifecta of songs is the most perfect grouping to me. I feel I need to throw in Muzzle, and you have pretty much encapsulated the magic of Smashing Pumpkins.

I know I am only supposed to pick one song, but seeing as they are all elements of an overarching masterpiece, I'd like to nominate the C'mon Trilogy.

(Come On) Let's Go
G.L.O.W.
F.O.L.

Don't you mean "Song Within a Song," Corgan's visionary project that pushes against the dying mainstream business model and is reinvigorating interest in his brand, and isn't just a label he came up with to obscure the fact that he simply doesn't want to admit that he bailed on the previous thing that he was working on?

real love is awesome but i find it hard to not pick an 'epic song' in this kind of discussion. hummer, mayo, glass and the ghost children, ruby, porcelina etc

this line though is among my fave raw imagery (as opposed to something like porcelina where it's like a fantasy painting)

"Buried in the backyard shadow, the rusty coffee tin
That held her mother's first kiss in a nameless dream"

I think this kind of song is the most important to me, but I wouldn't pick all three songs in a top 3 list as these kinds of songs. There's more to SP than that, even though the best parts of songs tend to be those honest kind of moments, and the whole songs like that are among the best as mentioned.

For example, Real Love, Geek USA, tonight tonight, ruby/porcelina, glynis, hello kitty kat, 33 - would all be contenders

Has all of the great factors that make for a classic SP song. Wicked groove, killer drum parts, great off the cusp Corgan guitar work.

Really though, I could easily subtract Quiet for a song like Soma, Geek USA, Hello Kitty Kat ETC

It's the one I'm most impressed by, cuz the lyrics. He busted his lyrical nut on that one. It guarantee's transcendence each listen.
