Ranking the SP2 Singles: Where Does Solara Stack Up?
Where would you rank Solara among the singles Billy has put out since sort of putting the band back together? I just looked it up and I was surprised to see that they had designated a LOT of songs as singles since Zeitgeist.
I think I'd rank them as follows: Tarantula Panopticon GLOW Solara The Celestials That's the Way Doomsday Clock Drum + Fife One and All Being Beige Freak Owata Superchrist Widow Wake My Mind Also, it probably wouldn't have made much of a difference, but why the hell wasn't "Tiberius" released as a single? It's arguably better than the rest of the tracks on Monuments and would have certainly been a better lead single than Being Beige. |

Run2Me got a video... surely that must make it some sort of single. Really I find it hard to consider many of these singles in the YouTube/streaming era.

Tarantula is the best and Widow Wake My Mind is the worst. beyond that... I dunno, I can't even remember what some of these songs sound like. the Teargarden shit and Monuments is just a blur to me

That's the Way
Tarantula Doomsday Clock One and All Drum + Fife Freak Superchrist GLOW Panopticon The Celestials Widow Wake My Mind Being Beige Solara Owata Some of these songs were hard to rank on the basis that I simply don't give a shit about them one way or another - I actually had to look up Panopticon just to remember what it sounded like. Surprisingly strong track outside of the context of the album (more specifically, the context of coming right after Quasar) so it ended up jumping up a few spots SP2 ain't that bad after all, I guess |

Panopticon sounded amazing when they premiered it live. Studio version sounds dead and boring to me, but I was extremely excited for it before the album was released

there are actually very few SP2 songs I would say this about. They generally sound better live, but I wouldn't say most of them sounded "good," haha.
Hearing Panopticon when they first played it in fall 2011 or whatever got me excited in a way I have not been since, for sure, after accepting Billy is literally a terrible, terrible producer and will ruin anything in the studio even if it's a great song |

One of my friends saw them in 2011 in Boston. I remember him calling me after the show screaming, "they're back dude. These new songs sound like Silverfuck or Geek U.S.A." That actually reignited my interest in TbK/Oceania a little. Then, Quasar ended up being my least favorite SP song of all time. |

I forgot Run2Me had a video. I guess that makes it a single too. As for FOL... was that considered a single? I mean, it was never available for download to my knowledge and it wasn't part of any album. Anyway, here's a revised list:
Tarantula Panopticon GLOW Solara The Celestials That's the Way Doomsday Clock Drum + Fife One and All Being Beige Freak Owata Run2Me Superchrist Widow Wake My Mind Also, I agree that it's difficult to rank most of these aside from Tarantula and Widow Wanker. Most of them aren't outright bad, they're just... mediocre. I do like Panopticon a lot though. |

Were those considered singles?
Either way, I refuse to acknowledge that there is a song in the SP catalogue called "Astral Planes." I don't believe this song exists, and I'm sure that EVERYONE EVERYONE will agree with me. |

It's the best one since Tarantula. I guess that's something. The style is really repetitive and simple like most of the post MCIS stuff and especially the post 2007 stuff. It's better than the Monuments stuff due to Jimmy alone and better than Oceania for the same reason. I'd like to hear a Violet Rays or Tiberius kind of song with Jimmy and especially James. Along with Bleeding the Orchid those are the only 3 songs from the last 11 years I can say are good.
One thing that's really obvious now relative to the last 18 years is the stabilizing effect James has on the band. I'd be really interested in hearing what they can record together. TBK is a dumpster fire and I don't acknowledge its existence. A lot of specific things would need to happen to get some or even one genuinely good song/s from this iteration of the band: 1) Billy needs to not fuck up the production I. E. burying the drums in the mix, layering million Billy choirs, mixing the vocals too high, and just general overproduction and studio fucker, also choosing shitty arrangements (see Raindrops and Sunshowers vs the outtake version). Chances not high here as he's fucked basically everything after Adore in this way. 2) Let James take a stab at having some creative input. It's blatantly obvious at this point how crucial he was to the signature sound of the band, the swirling shoegaze wall of guitars with varied melodies. That has been mostly absent since 2007. 3) Actually write an interesting song consisting of more than a few chords and using the low E string as a chugging, droning bore... write some fucking melodies. Again, chances not high here... see Zeitgeist onward. Oceania was sort of a step in the right direction but suffers from lack of Jim and #1 above Last edited by killtrocity : 08-23-2018 at 04:01 PM. |

Fun challenge - queue these 3 up at a party and get to the end without intervention. Would literally be impossible.

Yeah, TBK makes me embarrassed to be an SP fan. Even though there are some tracks there that I don't mind, the whole thing in and of itself just felt like a vanity project.

I'm not suggesting anyone do this but do you think it would be possible to piece together a really good album by taking songs from each of SP2's releases? Not something that is Siamese Dream/Mellon Collie quality obviously, but hypothetically if Bill had not released anything until now and had all of those tracks to choose from, do you think it's possible that he could have crafted a great album?
Of course, if that happened, we all know that the album would probably feature the WORST songs of each release, because Billy has horrible taste when it comes to his own material. |

Thanks, I think I could actually listen to this playlist often where as the individual albums not so much
I wanted it to flow musically, but also work lyrically. I had a couple of other songs, but they just didn't work with the rest. I had Anti-Hero in place of One And All at first. Tom Tom and FOL were also possibilities that in the end didn't work. I think lyrically there's a story still. Last edited by MyKeyZ : 08-25-2018 at 04:33 AM. |
