Default do you guys ever play music to get yourselves going? what do you play?

I am so stressed out right now. 50% assignment due tomorrow (3000 words), and another, 70% assignment due next week (4500 words). I handed in my screenplay (6000 words) last friday. I am just in the thick of it and I have writer's block. So here I am trying to crack into writing mode. This current assignment is for a core paper that I would have never taken. So it's hard to just bust it out unless I hit the 'zone'.

I'm also playing organ for a church service this Sunday, so have a five hymns, an anthem, an introit & music for before and after (when people are walking in and out), and music to play while the offering is being taken up.

Somebody mentioned to me a while ago unlocking creative energy by engaging in something creative unrelated to the task you're working on, so I tried practising the hymns; nothing. Then I ended up just playing for myself, and made up a song with no words and just played that for a while. I feel better, but still nothing.

Help. Last week when working on my screenplay I listened to (oddly) placebo unplugged and bach, but that's just not doing it for me this week. It's an essay on an aspect of local literature and literary culture, so I can't listen to anything with words, it just distracts me. Aggghhhh musicians please help me

tl;dr

Your Q is a bit unclear to me. By "play" music do u mean listen or perform music on an instrument?

If the former, try the title track from Pantera's "The Great Southern Trendkill," played as loudly as you can tolerate. I am not a Pantera fan, but this song never fails to energize me, or at least to "cleanse the mental palate."

If the latter, I find playing things that are seemingly atonal or dissonant, then trying to work them into some kind of coherent melody, is a good exercise for clearing stagnation

Good luck

I was pretty vague. Sorry about that. Actually though, I meant either/or - I think it's a similar process/practice, whether you play an instrument or listen to music.

Today, the Trout Quintet is working, so that's good. That, and silence.

English literature is death, btw.

i (used to) improvise over music a LOT.

just put on some songs and solo over them for hours. i think at some point it got counterproductive, cause it just made me listen to the same songs at some point and get stuck in a rut improv wise - but for better or worse, it's what got me my soloing skills.

fucking around with a lot of different tunings lately has been a pretty significant source of inspiration. i also want to rip off some shoegaze bands sometime soon.

I listen to Abbath and Immortal to get myself going.

Hope that helps, vixnix.

same. I learned basic scales and how to put together a solo that actually sounds like something by playing over SP and Pearl Jam songs basically.

Dadrock is used specifically for rock you personally find tame, inoffensive, not challenging not literally something that was released when your Dad was in high school I hate to explain the joke though

Nothing wrong with Rust in Peace though. Great album with some quality musicianship. Some of you guys are too kool for skool.
