this is especially true when it comes to trans characters.

It reinforces the idea to straight and cis people that being trans or gay is a behavior. That it's something a straight/cis person does, and not a valid identity or orientation that is inherent.

It's especially bad when it's an actor and performance that blatantly bolsters existing stereotypes held by straight people.

Compare Matt Bomer in the movie "Anything" with Indy Moore in "Pose."

Moore is a trans woman playing a trans woman. Her depiction of her character is authentic. She IS a woman. And she is relate-able and believable in her role. Bomer is a Cis man playing a trans woman. He doesn't look, talk or walk authentically on camera. His presentation and the fact that he is a cis man reinforces the idea that HE is NOT a woman. That when the scene or story ends he takes off his costume. And that trans women are therefore simply men in costumes
