Speaking of people who look old and shit, David Pirner is not aging terribly well. I was surprised by how decent Soul Asylum sounded though.

Overall, a night well spent among a sea of people with grey/greying pubes.

Thought it went without saying? Sorry bruh. Local H are the reason I endangered my own life getting to the venue in the first place. Soul Asylum aren't generally an act I'd leave the house for, but I enjoyed them just the same. But Local H tore that place a new asshole. And Scott is a mensch.

Half the crowd bailed out after Soul Asylum did Runaway Train, by the way. Probably couldn't afford another hour of babysitting.

Seriously, I think there's another user here (Turdlion, perhaps?) who worships at the church of Local H as well. I'll just wait patiently for whoever the fuck it is to come out of the woodwork.

At least there's one formerly prominent '90s band from Chicago that isn't making a career out of sucking ass.

Tonic and Fuel start at 7pm, just down the street from Larry's Pool Hall. So, 6pm work for you?

Cool

I saw them in…I'm guessing '96 or '97, for First Band on the Moon it must have been, and they were a lot of fun

If I'm remembering right, a Swedish rock band called Kent opened, and I ended up buying a couple of their good but, in hindsight, unremarkable albums

I shouldn't be saying this but I'll probably be there tonight at 5 just to scope the place out and check the angles

Dude, duuuuude. Gram Turismo. It's totally dated and soo 1998, but in the best possible way.

Their last two albums are more pop/country leaning but are also excellent.

Oh, I guess Dan won't be making the show tonight.

On October 9, 2012, Murphy announced his departure from Soul Asylum on the forum of EnterTheSoulAsylum.com. His decision to leave the band was to continue a quieter life with friends and family.

yeah, Dave's got Prince's old drummer and a couple of kids who look like they were swimming around in someone's nutsack when Runaway Train was burning up the charts.

yeah, but what do you know about Golden Smog?

In 1988, Murphy formed Golden Smog, a Minneapolis supergroup made up of members of The Replacements, The Jayhawks and Run Westy Run. Murphy was credited as 'David Spear' on the group's second album, Down by the Old Mainstream, because of contractual obligations.

I did see soul asylum and fuel at a festival a few months ago. soul asylum were predictably boring and fuel had so many problems with the sound they sounded terrible for the first 4-5 songs, only played like 7 songs because of all the time trying to fix everything, and the guitarist had to share the microphone with the lead singer because they just never got the other one to work. once the sound got fixed they sounded alright but man it was such a fucking disaster

Not a big Fuel fan, aside from hearing Shimmer on the radio occasionally and cranking it up in spite of myself. But I'd see them if it was $5 or less.

Do you generally like Soul Asylum or do you just find their brand of Midwestern-styled prom punk rock insufferable in general? I'll admit their performance was a big comedown after seeing the much more exciting/heavier Local H and after meeting Scott, but I think they sounded pretty good for an aging nostalgia act.

i'll give that one, First Band & Life a listen soon

hell, maybe even today!

I could tell GT was prob a very 90s-riffic affair based on that PS1-looking cover alone

so i listened to First Band on the Moon & Life yesterday. First Band is good, Lovefool obviously had the biggest endorphin-rush factor on first listen but I do owe the whole thing a revisit. Life on the other hand, I'll definitely be revisiting soon. The sound of that thing paired with the sweet pop/retro/whatever charms of the songs is right up my alley atm

I realize neither of these are actually the album you recommended, but you take what you can get eh?
