Guitar playing was superb on every GoF album I've heard

but damn did everything else kinda suck post-OG line-up

particularly bad drummer clobbering around with none of the subtle groove and nuance

album as a whole is sorta like a warmer Solid Gold w/ an attack & energy they didn't really have on record since Entertainment! & none of the drudgy disco-lite production that plagued the other couple of 80s records - thank the lord!

speaking of the post-Solid Gold 80s stuff, there was apparently talk of re-recording Songs of the Free at some point after they did Return the Gift. I really fucking wish that had happened because good god even just on this one they turned a limp, dated disco attempt to a fuckin' full-on banger
