I've worked there a couple years now and there were always a couple of things that I found hard to live with. it's a big company, I'm not even talking about the hollow phrases and pointless requirements. there were good things as well, I get to work from home a day a week and it's really close to where I live. that's what kept me going back and forth from "this is not too bad" to "I want to kill myself" for the last year and a half.
what always troubled me most is essentially a complete lack of management in a couple of ways. the work that I do, I do together with 2 or 3 other people. if one of them decided to not do anything, I get to do double the next day. for some reason there have always been people like this. and for some reason management is very random/selective in who they choose to reprimand. meaning, if someone plays it somewhat smart they will get away with lots of things for ages. also: if someone doesn't play it smart and it's well known with management they don't live up to the requirements, it still takes about a year for them to do something about it - this person gets away doing 20% of what people are required to do for a whole year before they're fired. that would be fine and all, but for some reason I'm held responsible if I just do everything that's asked from me and the extra things that were asked on top of that - and then there's another couple of small things I was requested to do which I postpone to the next day. we've also had aggressive coworkers, people that are super mean to customers (while saying things that are dead wrong), borderliners, flat out backstabbers and extremely lazy people that we had to deal with, the past couple of years I've dealt with a lot of frustration, insomnia and suppressed depression (thank god for antidepressants) because of it. we've also had a lot of good people - they all got frustrated and left. it always seemed to me that management just hired everyone who said 'I can work' - which makes it a dubious honour for me to have worked there. those people were not the root cause of the trouble - it's the fact that management has always said 'we can't monitor everything, so if there's something you notice about your colleagues please tell us'. this was always said in appraisals and evaluations which made me paranoid, cause who knows what is said about me. I always felt that it would lead to gestapo situations and I never wanted in on it; I told them and of course that wasn't the way I should look at it etc etc. the latest feller that started out being capable and quick and friendly and somehow turned into a complete demon was also on my team and me and my colleagues noticed how his work ethics went down the loo. on a regular basis, more and more, he'd just not do the stuff he was required to do; causing me and other people to have double as much. it got blatant too and I really didn't trust the guy who was supposed to monitor him. i asked him what his deal was and he told me he simply waited until he could outsource the work he was supposed to do to new colleagues. I grew really frustrated of this and with a heavy heart I decided to do that thing I'd promised myself not to do: inform my manager. we had this talk and I felt he understood what I was saying. he also said he grew to trust the person in question and had no idea it was like that. I asked him to please not talk to him directly but just monitor his work instead - does he do what's on the agenda etc, you know, the stuff a manager should keep an eye on. he understood and he'd pay more attention. a few weeks later, the guy got a promotion. he could now tell me what to do. my manager left to another team. amazing stuff. I'm out. bye |
