encino man - 9/10

despite the sexist plot and pauly shores eruditic japes zooming mostly over my head, this was a comforting and nostalgic romp that left me cheering for the young samwise gamgee, and wishing i too had made somethimg of myself in high school

Watched a glut of movies over the last few days

OG Star Wars Trilogy - 10/10

Leaving Las Vegas - 9/10 Coulda been a 10 if not for that godawful soundtrack

No Country For Old Men - 10/10 Didn't like it the first time I saw it. Fell in love with it this time.

There Will Be Blood - 10/10 How did this one elude me for so long? Pure fucking brilliance. Great soundtrack/score, too

They Live - 4/5
I had a blast with this film, I don't think it aged particularly well. But that somehow made it better.

Prince of Darkness - 5/5
This film was super tense and some of the imagery will probably stay with me. Freaky stuff.
Even Alice Cooper couldn't keep it from being disturbing.

I fucking love They Live. All about that back alley brawl.

As big a fan as I am of Carpenter, Prince of Darkness has always left me somewhat cold.

Really? I thought it was super effective. Had never seen it before and it got to me.
The ending was especially great imo.

Visually, I think it's a strong film but I didn't care for a single one of the characters.

Every few years I watch it, hoping I'll see something in it I never saw before. And I am disappointed every time. Same thing happens with Wes Craven's The Serpent and the Rainbow.

The Big Lebowski - 10/10 always good for a re-watch
Quiz Show - 8/10 not the most compelling story, but fantastic performances all around

Ghost in the Shell (1995) - 4/5

I thought the dialogue was needlessly overwrought and the middle part drags quite a bit. That said, aesthetically and visually I think it's pretty damn good.

saw manchester by the sea instead of seeing rogue one again. didn't regret it.

top three for 2016 stands at manchester, hacksaw ridge, and arrival, in no particular order although the more i think about it, the more i want to rank manchester first. i keep forgetting when silence is coming out. i think it's this friday

The Dark Knight Rises - 8/10

I don't know what compelled me to watch it again, as I had already rewatched it in the past year (I try not to watch any film more than once per year, even my favorites (which this one most certainly is not (but I digress))). I guess I just needed a good Bane fix (great fucking villain, til he bitches out in his last five minutes onscreen). The more I watch it, the less I like it and the more plot-holes and inconsistencies I find. I guess it should be whittled down to a 7/10 at this point, but maybe next time?

Also, I totally woulda watched the shit out of a JGL Robin/Nightwing spinoff flick. Why didn't we get that instead of this Zack Snyder garbage they've been shoveling our way?

Honestly, I only fully like The Dark Knight out of that trilogy. And that may very well be just because of Heath Ledger's Joker.

I'd love to see an updated take on Tim Burton's aesthetic for Batman.
I still find those first 2 old films to be my favorite Batman films.

TDK is the best, by far. Batman Begins is a distant second, with Rises being the weakest of the three.

Still dig the trilogy on the whole, but Rises was kind of a fumble. And enjoyable, visually-striking fumble at that.

Batman Returns is my personal favorite, though I can look at it objectively and see that it is a terribly flawed film.

I can sympathize with this when it comes to the MCU and the recent DC fare.

Whatever, give me Darkman -- a non-comic book superhero flick -- and I'm happy.

It's just the perpetual 8 year old in me that's still snagged on Batman. I grew up watching the '60s show, the '60s movie, the '90s animated series and the first two Burtons. It's ingrained in me.

Yeah, I definitely felt that way when they did the Andrew Garfield reboot 5 fucking years after Spider-Man 3. And it sucked.

Honestly, though, the newest Spider-Man looks promising. He was the best part of Civil War (aka Avengers 2.5).

Garfield sucked as Spidey. Spider-Man shouldn't be cool, cute or hip, nor should he resemble what Elphenor thinks of himself as.
