My wife was at his final gig in SLC, Utah - wild, but I didn't know that there was video footage of (most of) it:

I was a huge fan of his during his life (and still after). He was an amazing artist. I remember watching a video of one of his recording sessions. He played all the instruments himself, but was so ADD that he couldn't stick to one instrument for very long and was constantly going between the whole slew of them. Between recordings, he took skateboard breaks.
He seemed so chill. If I had never heard his lyrics, I would have thought he had no problems in the world. His Figure 8 album is my favorite. I like the energy in it a little more than the others. His album "From a Basement on a Hill" was morbid for more reasons than just the fact that it was the last album he ever worked on before his death. It was full of sarcastic cheer over bleak words. |

XO is a good pick, it was my first. But it's pretty stylistically different from what made him "famous". I'd go with Either/Or. Has my personal favorite jam by him - Angeles - as posted up there.

I love all the different transitions in the song, Can't Make a Sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJOOCY2rPwI It's like he couldn't decide what style he want to go with. |

Either/Or is a cigarette at midnight. XO is a joint at dawn.

Rose Parade is my favorite by far. Ballad of Big Nothing is also stellar.
