Angry jesus, $145 for a tailight

when the only thing wrong with it is a 1 inch hole cracked into the plastic shell. the bulb and everything else is intact. i have a golf 2004, and i just called the parts dept. cos the right tailight broke, and that's only the price to purchase the part

Is this direct from Volkswagen or something? Can't you just go to a parts superstore - or even better, a junkyard?

Honestly just about any person of average mechanical intelligence should be able to put it on for you. I'd like to think you could even do it yourself but I want to be too idealistic.

its a 2004, so i doubt they would have it at a junkyard. And it's a foreign car, so I doubt they would have it at discount auto parts. Don't know how to help.

it's not a matter of putting it on, i can do that myself. i said that the part alone costs 145 bucks

Oh I thought you were complaining about $145 for the part and then having to pay for labor too. If its a 2004 car of course the tail light costs $145. How do you think they make the total of cars add up to around 20 grand? Not with tail lights that cost $3.

labour alone would be 85 bucks

It's a carry-over from the previous year though, so the parts on the older models may work.

I agree about dealers charging ridiculous prices. Pontiac wanted $100 for that little liscence plate cover for the front of my GPGT.

so, would you rather pay 150 for one tail light of pay substantially less for 2 and not have yellow.

well considering my car is brand new, i would not want to start making it look old and cheap by replacing it with the wrong parts. i also take into consideration the fact that if i sell it one day i want for it to be in pristine condition like my previous 2 cars where. they looked and even smelled like new when i turned them in (i sold the twingo, and the focus was a lease).

What model is it exactly? Just because it's a 2004 model doesn't mean it's a new design.

So there's a better chance of finding one in a junkyard. Call a few - ask if they have any of your model in there. You'll probably end up paying a few bucks for it.
