Talking NFL Players Agent Fails to Properly File Free Agent Paperwork

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slu...v=ap&type=lgns

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Browns wide receiver Dennis Northcutt failed to file the proper paperwork with the team and cannot become an unrestricted free agent.

Northcutt signed a seven-year contract in 2000. He had been required to notify the Browns by Feb. 19 if he planned to void the final three years of his deal, the team said. The Browns said Northcutt and his agent failed to inform the club by certified mail.

Team president Carmen Policy said Thursday the NFL management council confirmed Northcutt is under contract with the Browns through the 2006 season.

Northcutt led the club with 62 catches for 729 yards and two touchdowns last season. The speedy receiver-punt returner wanted to test the free-agent market next month.

Agent Jerome Stanley could not immediately be reached. A message was left with the players' union.

-------------------
He's making < $1mil/season, and was looking for around $3mil/season once hitting the free agent market. Ouch?

In TO's case, the part about being under contract facilitating a trade makes some sense, though. Maybe they are close to trading him.

But then again, probably not--- there's no way TO doesn't go for the scrilla.

why would he want to be under contract at all? how does that make anything easier? a free agent goes where he wants, now he's going to have that decided for him?

Being under contract may make the deal easier to make if the receiving team knows that they will not have to renegotiate a new contract.

Terrell Owens pops off the entire off-season about leaving the 49'ers or if he were to stay they need to get rif of Jeff Garcia...then the only leverage he had in the whole process his Agent drops the ball on the free agent deadline?

but as a free agent there is no 'receiving team' until he signs a contract. there is no 'deal'. it's a free agent acquisition. plenty of teams were/are prepared to go after him, unless he wins his grievance case, he loses out.

a player like Owens has to be either looking to play for the highest bidder...or a city/team he happens to like, for whatever reason. if he gets locked up another 3 years w/ SF and they look to trade him, he'll get neither.

Unless I didn't hear about TO changing his name to Dennis Northcutt, you might want to re-read the orignal story.
