Default joseph heller (a book reccomendation thread)

Anyone read anything by joseph heller other than Catch 22? Did you like? Would you suggest them?

those who don't have an answer should reccomend a book.

well, I guess you could say that, but it's not funny like Catch 22 often is. It's mostly just really moving. It takes place in December 1990, during their civil war, not the US/Vietnam War. It's so good, I read it just last week.

I am reading this massive book called The Crimson Petal and The White, by Michel Faber. I do recommend it, thus far.

I read "Something Happened" by Heller, and I should sue for false advertisement because nothing actually did. Dull as sin, and I loved Catch 22.

Dostoyevski - The Brothers Karamazov
Danielski - House Of Leaves
Stephenson - Cryptomnicon

I've read Good as Gold and Closing Time as well. Closing Time is a sequel of Catch 22, though it ain't that good (ubt it must be damn hard to top Catch 22), it's quite funny as well. I've had a good time with that one, too.

I am about to get Catch as Catch Can.

I just saw someone reading Catch 22 on the bus and it reminded me I should look into it.

Here's an EXCELLENT book for you:
The Tin Drum by Gunter Grass

It's set in Poland in pre-war, war, and post-war time, but it's from the viewpoint of this strange little midget fellow named Oskar. It sounds bizarre, but it's really amazing. Grass won the Nobel Prize for Literature and it took me a while to read it (I'm not quite finished ), not because it's difficult to read but because he fills his writing with so much content. This book is awesome.

"The Tin Drum uses savage comedy and a stiff dose of magical realism to capture not only the madness of war, but also the black cancer at the heart of humanity that allows such degradations to occur. Grass wields his humor like a knife--yes, he'll make you laugh, but he'll make you bleed, as well. There have been many novels written about World War II, but only a handful can truly be called great; The Tin Drum, without a doubt, is one. --Alix Wilber " (From amazon.com, here's their page for the book: The Tin Drum.

i wasn't too keen on closing time but i guess it's worth a read. i can't remember what the biography is called but that pretty good. nothing tops catch 22 though.

you guys are awsome. I have such a hard time finding books to read, and people alwasys suggest a style i don't like.. it sounds like I'll have a few books from this thread now

I wonder if I were to tell amazon what books are my favorite, how well it would distinguish what I'd like..

You know when you look up a book on Amazon, there's this thing that says "Customers who bought this book also bought:" and they give you about four books to look at. I've found some good books that way.

I don't know if you have to buy books, but you do have to have a username and password. Then when you go to the Amazon homepage it will say, "Hi Ammy! We have recommendations for you!"
