Honestly because they aren't as successful or rich as America. Plus America is an extremely violent country.

Most likely it is a combination of factors. To say it is only taxation or only monopoly is a bit shortsighted.

of course it's a combination of factors...but government taxation of petrol in the UK is over 85%. it's by FAR the biggest reason to justify its current price.

let's suppose a big mac costs 50 cents to make
and the government places a 10 cent tax per big mac sold

if mcdonalds decide to sell each burger at $2, someone then turning around and saying "the reason they're so expensive is cos of government taxation" is plainly ridiculous.

in conclusion, there may be a monopoly on petrol within the UK, but that's not the reason it's so expensive.

Ok, that is what I wanted the whole time. It semed to me that you wouldn't admit there was a monopoly. If you do then I have no more beef.

in fairness, i don't know if there is a monopoly, but i'm willing to believe there is based on the roughly standardised pricing across europe.

the UK however is an exception is as far as we're taxed to the hilt.

I would never argue that. I have read it and seen it (from my family and from experience).

I think the debate in this thread has come down to people with a very mercenary attitude versus people with a more altruistic outlook. And there's never going to be any agreement on how these things should be handled. It's more complex than who should give money to charitable causes though

You have a sense of pride for your nation. If there was a big England thread and everyone started bashing it, you'd probably run to its defense. Just because you happen to disagree with some American policies, does that mean no one here is allowed to have the same sense of nationalisn that you carry??

Also, as someone else mentioned it is garbage that you use the one example of Band Aid to somehow prove that Americans are 100% less helpful 100% of the time. Considering I hadn't even heard of BandAid, it probably A) wasn't promoted as well in America and B) probably wasn't watched by as many people here as in Britain. As you've told me, the top TV program there might get almost 50% of the nation watching it. Here, the top program might get 10% of the country watching it. 50% of 60 million people is 30 million, and 10% of 300 million is also 30 million. I'm not about to drag up old Nielson (viewership) ratings of what happened on that night, but we just don't all tune into the same channel. If we didn't watch the concert and didn't know it existed, are we just supposed to telepathically figure out that we're supposed to call a number to donate?

Also, I find it quite hilarious that you come here to tell off Americans who have the "let someone else give money to charity" attitude when I've heard the exact same sentiment come from your mouth. I remember the stories you told about being stuck with some guy at the door and you desperately trying to get away b/c you weren't about to give him a penny. Sucks when reality bites you in the ass, eh??

You know why altruism sucks tho??
B/c in the wild, animals who display altruistic behavior often get eaten by predators. I am not about to have my day ruined due to being eaten!
