Oral Sex Shown to Be Linked to Mouth Cancer
Wed Feb 25, 2:54 PM ET Add Health - Reuters to My Yahoo!

LONDON (Reuters) - Although the risk is small and it is more likely to result from heavy drinking and smoking, scientists have uncovered evidence that oral sex can cause mouth cancer.
Researchers had suspected that a sexually transmitted infection that is linked to cervical cancer could also be associated with tumors in the mouth.

Now a study by researchers working for the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France seems to have confirmed it.

"Oral sex can lead to oral tumors," New Scientist magazine said Wednesday, referring to the latest research.

The scientists studied more than 1,600 patients from Europe, Canada, Australia, Cuba and the Sudan with oral cancer and more than 1,700 healthy people.

They found that patients with oral cancer containing a strain of the human papilloma virus (HPV) known as HPV16 were three times more likely to report having had oral sex than those without the virus strain.

"The researchers think both cunnilingus and fellatio can infect people's mouths," the magazine added.

Raphael Viscidi, a virologist who worked on the research, believes the findings substantiate the link between HPV and oral cancer.

"This is a major study in terms of size," he said. "I think this will convince people."

High consumptions of alcohol and cigarettes are estimated to cause 75-90 percent of all cases of oral cancer. The combination of tobacco smoke and alcohol are thought to produce high levels of cancer causing agents.

Scientists are currently working on vaccines to prevent cervical cancer, which is more common, but they might also be effective against oral cancer.

"It is thought the vaccines would prevent oral infections as well," the magazine added.

This is hardly a surprise. Virii/bacteria can lead to cancer, thus, an STD associated with the cervix could be transfered to the mouth by oral sex and could in turn lead to cancer.

if you cancel out your cancer, you'll not longer have the cancer you claim to love.

in my opinion, people in general have to stop caring about what "they" are saying. science reports, studies, whatever, ive completely abandoned them. people take these things way to literally, or the media does. "they say that red wine leads to a reduced risk of heart failue" or whatever, than the next week some other university "links" it to breast cancer or something else ubiquitous. ubiquitous enough to pretty much mean nothing. virtually everything, in moderation is good for you. shit, poison is even good for you in moderation (true). its scary seeing people obsess over the newest health trend. does anyone ceremoniously drink 8 glasses of water a day? if you do i want to punch your face

hey, i drink a lot too. i wash my hands a lot and do a lot of other stuff "they" said for me to do, but for my own reasons. its not all bullshit, but theres a lot of flimsy links and fickle reports that people take too literally. like the 8 glasses thing. i know people that literally count and measure out their daily water ration. for the most part if it feels good, do it. i get headaches when i dont drink enough water and that doesnt feel good

they can't put out a report that says "umm, the surgeon general says it's good to drink plenty of water". there is always going to be a general idea expressed by a number. a person who tries to follow guidelines to the dot has other issues.

i, personally, would recommend more water.

this is not a surprise, of course, but it's scary, combined with me watching 'The Corporation' tonight and being terrified by the statistic that 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will have cancer in their lifetime. I bet that by the time I'll be 30 or so, odds will be higher.
