N.Y. police chief defends border chase cops

ST. CATHARINES, ONT. - A New York police chief defended his officers Friday after Canadian officials criticized a high-speed chase through an Ontario border crossing.

Niagara Falls Chief John Chella said he fully supported the officers' actions, which he said were justified.

"I am fully convinced that this situation warranted such circumstances," said Chella.

Late Wednesday night, a man from New York state drove a pickup truck through a tollgate on the American side of the Rainbow Bridge.

A U.S. police cruiser followed the truck into Canada, where the driver smashed into parked cars, killing a 40-year-old woman. A man was arrested and faces multiple charges, including impaired driving causing death.

Monte Kwinter, Ontario's Community Safety minister, called the incident "totally inexcusable," saying U.S. officers didn't follow protocol.

"There was supposed to be a protocol when they try and get into Canada to let border officials know. They didn't do that," said Kwinter.

Ron Moran, with Canada Customs, agreed with Kwinter.

"They are supposed to radio in ahead or call in that they have a chase that they believe will cross the border so that the other side can prepare itself," said Moran.

A joint investigation will be held by Niagara Falls New York Police, Niagara Police and Canada Customs.

Woman killed in cross-border car chase

NIAGARA FALLS, ONT. - A 28-year-old American faces a number of criminal charges, including impaired driving causing death and attempted murder after a cross-border car chase at Niagara Falls resulted in the death of a 40-year-old pedestrian.

Police say the ordeal began Wednesday evening when a man carjacked a vehicle in Buffalo, N.Y., and put the driver in the trunk.

When the car suffered a flat tire in a parking lot in Niagara Falls, N.Y., he abandoned the car and stole a pickup truck, police said.

Police say they began pursuing the vehicle as it headed toward the border between Canada and the U.S.

"The stolen vehicle crashed through the barricades on the U.S. side of the Rainbow Bridge and crashed through the Canadian side of the Rainbow Bridge," said Det. John Olander of Niagara Falls police.

Once in Niagara Falls, Ont., the pickup truck crashed into a compact car, pushing it into a female pedestrian and killing her.

Police say the truck continued until it crashed into a snowbank.

The driver then got out of the car and shot at one of the officers, missing him.

As police and the man wrestled for the gun, other police and people in the area helped subdue the man.

Cornelieus Croft is charged with impaired driving causing death, attempted murder and several firearms offences.

whoa whoa, so what you are saying is that Americans SHOULDN'T be able to chase suspects into foreign nations where they have no jurisdiction?
So just how the hell is America ever going to be safe from terrorists??

the chase should have been taken over by canadian police officers who would have prevented a pededstrian death by giving the driver more space. fucking americans. this isn't about terrorists, this is about some drunk fucking hick who thought he'd get complete amnesty by crossing the boarder, like in a fucking movie or some shit.

That's what they do, they throw them all into cars and chase them right into Canada so they don't have to worry about them for a little while.

This is terrible and shameful. It has nothing to due with the nationalities. It has to do with the irresponsibility of two law enforcement agencies and two opposing customs not coordinating correctly. Lack of communication was the problem here. Due to this a woman died.

Americans didn't kill that woman. The man who stole the truck did.
