You're standing in a crowd and someone you don't know waves at you, and you wave back, only to find out that they were waving at someone standing behind you?

It is embarrassing.

just pretend like you were waving at someone behind them

or that you saw a bee

I can't fool anyone. I mean, you just have to suck it up and embarrassed and admit that you made a mistake and are a social reject.

no one else pays as much attention to these little things as one does internally.
so you had a stupid mistake! what kind of idiot brings that up again or even remembers? "hey this guy TOTALLY waved at me when i was waving at you man! i didn't even KNOW him!"

I guess it isn't that bad, thanks for clearing that up for me. But if I ever see them again, they might remember me and laugh or tell their friends. I do what I can to limit the number of people in the world who think I am an idiot.
