My guess would be one of two things caused it:
corrupted (NOT missing) fonts. If the font file is corrupt, Windows will attempt to display it. If it is missing it will simply use a replacement font.

The other option is a corrupted Windows file.

Either way, there's a very good chance you would have had to restore (especially if you're on XP). The only other thing I would have done is checked the Display Properties and chosen some funky-ass fonts and seen if they appear then, and gotten replacements for my core fonts.

I wasn't sure about the fonts, because if you look at the first screen shot you can see some text in the list of dial-up connections, but the screen is getting corrupted

It's definitely seeing the server then. Ok, what username do you have to enter when you turn on the crazy computer? And what workgroup name is in the workgroup box?

no username when you turn the computer on.

the workgroup name = WORKGROUP. like on the other machines. i noticed that it says documents and settings\owner

i think "owner" might be the problem. where do i change this setting?

Yeah, but then again it could be using a different font. Like I said, it's probably Windows corruption.

Anyway Lee, I don't feel like rereading this whole thread (nor do I have time right now) but I didn't see any suggestion to go to the computer you are trying to share and enabling sharing on a drive or folder...

Also on a WinNT/XP/2000 system you don't need to DL that winntipcfg utility. Just go to start, type CMD, type ipconfig.

No, no, that's your profile directory. That's just where the command starts by default. Owner is the default XP account.

That's fine.

Where's this 'documents and settings' bit?

If you're not using usernames, it must be based on IP addresses or something. Can you see any network folders at all from the crazy computer, or was the F one the only network one? (Network folders/drives being ones which aren't on the actual computer.) Are you sure you typed the share name exactly when you tried to recreated the F drive?

It sounds like a shared drive on the server though, and all the other machines have access to it - it must already be shared, but there's a permissions issue

well when i went to map the network drive, it gives you first the drop down tab where i selected F
then it allows me only to highlight either "nt4c4511 on fdrive" or "blabla on cdrom"
then i put finished and that's when i get the network path cannot be found

It's not letting you do which? Start, Run, CMD? That should bring up a command prompt.

Then in the command prompt you should be able to do a winipcfg.

C:|Documents and Settings\XXXXX is the profile directories are stored. WinXP ALWAYS uses "owner" as a default profile to store My Documents, Desktop, etc etc.

A command prompt always that folder for default command prompt.

Ah, see I've hardly used XP. I may not be the best person to help out here.

Cathy, can you actually type out the share name? I mean, instead of just using one of the dropdown selections

No no. On XP/NT/2000 it's just ipconfig

Don't worry about it - I'll go when I'm going.

Open up an Explorer window (Windows+E) and try typing \\Nt4c4511 into the Address bar, see if you can see any folders. To be honest, you might have to go into the server, find the folder which is being shared (it should be called Fdrive), right-click it and select Sharing (or it might be Properties, then a Sharing tab). Then see who is able to access it, if you're not using logon names I guess it would have to be done by IP addresses. Take a look - just press Cancel when you're done and you won't change anything.

Also open up Windows Explorer and try and get to "My Network Places" and browse through the folders under there. Do you see any machines listed?

Hehe, just cancel away. Hmm, so you couldn't see anything about sharing to particular workgroups, or IP addresses? When you say you couldn't see yourself there - I thought you didn't have a login name?

It's all in the permissions bit. Plus, it looks as though it's shared as F$, not FDRIVE - try that instead when you map the drive
