you make such a big deal about driverless transfers but it's really not that hard to just take 1 minute to download the driver on the computer you're transferring to. and then wow, you never have to do it for that computer again. smart/on-the-go playlists and better navigation/interface are also pretty damn convenient features but for some reason I see people using these more than the external hard drive factor of these devices.
Like I said, you can have those playlists on the iRiver. I prefer the iRiver's design. It's easier to read on-screen, too. But, if you want to move music from machine to machine, you have to have iTunes, which completely takes over your music files and renames the file names, moves them around, etc. That's not cool. The display of it is great, but the backended crap it does suck. And this is coming from a Mac lover.

regardless of what you said, the ihp does not have on-the-go playlists. you cannot make a playlist without using your pc.

itunes only changes names/locations or your files if you tell it to. the option is off by default.

Yes, it does and, yes, you can.

post one article from the web, or a page from the instruction manual, or any segment from the list of firmware improvements and I'll believe you. by contrast I'll give you any number of complaints on the web about the ihp's lack of on the go playlist support. here's one from the cnet review, check the second paragraph.

http://reviews.cnet.com/iRiver_iHP_1...0571493-3.html

the arguments in this thread are getting stupider and stupider. I'm done arguing.

That's nice and all, but the latest iRiver firmware upgrade enabled the playlist options.

like I said in my previous post, post a link that says what was upgraded in what version and I'll believe you. cause I'm looking at the "latest iriver firmware upgrade" and I sure don't see it anywhere. nor do I see any link on the web talking about the ihp's newfound on the go playlist support.

CNet hardly ever updates their reviews for firmwares. And I have no clue where they would put their upgrades on the web, I don't use their Web site.

can irivers make 'smart' playlists?

For example I have a playlist on my ipod that randomly plays all songs from 'pop' genre that I've rated 4 or more stars (in the ipod, you can give all your songs ratings of 1 to 5 stars) that I haven't heard in over a month. Since it's "smart", it updates automatically -- after it plays a song from the list, it is taken off the playlist for a month. Also, as I listen to new songs I just added to the ipod, if I rate a song that matches the criteria I set, the song will automatically be added to the said playlist without ever having to connect to a computer.

The 'smart' playlists of the ipods are brillant. It makes the listening experience a million times better. parameters that you can use are artist, album, genre, year, time, last time you listened to the song, how many times you've listened to the song, beats per minute, etc.

And just to be completely bias, come on-- the ipod just looks so much more cooler and slicker than the iriver. the user interface just wows anybody and everybody that holds one in their hand. To my shallow self, that's worth the extra money i guess. eh. its' only money.

yeah the iPod is pimp looking. Whats funny is that i had negative views on this for a while until i read up on it more.

im not sure if i want to shell out so much $$ for it though. The 20gb and up iPods come with more stuff (case, dock...)

oh wat to do !

Yeah, it can do that. It also does the playlist where it will play songs that haven't been played in a while, but I forgot what that's called.

I fucking knew it.

I used to work there as well, so i am aware of how they can be.

turns out i stopped by this evening on my way home and checked the glass counter furthest back in electronics, and guess what i seen hiding behind some bulky camera items? 2 iPods. I had previously asked two different people about it (who knew well what an iPod was) and they said they had NO iPods at all. Another store had previously checked to see if they had them and it showed them as having 2 the day before.

Well, needless to say i now own a 10gb iPod.
