Default What if September you-know-what was an election day?

I just thought of this right now. Everything that day halted. Businesses nationwide closed. Events were postponed for about a month. What if there was an election that day? Would the polls be closed and opened on a later date?

Random musings. don't mind me.

Ummm...it was election day (in NYC). Everything was shut down and it was rescheduled. The candidates went all around taking down all their signs and everything right after it happened.

I'm pretty sure it was actually, weren't the primaries for the campaign to be mayor supposed to begin that morning?

so, it wasn't a federal election or anything, but it was still an election. And the actual election was delayed a few weeks then. IIRC.

It might be different though were it federal because its in the constitution that the election must be on the tuesday after the first monday in november.... or something like that.

Today, Electors are chosen by popular election, but the Constitution does not mandate a popular election. The 14th Amendment does mention the choosing of Electors, but is relevant only when Electors are elected by popular vote. There is similar mention in the 24th Amendment. In other words, Electors could be appointed by a state's legislature, or the legislature could empower the governor to choose electors. In some cases, state law allows for such appointments if the popular vote cannot be used to determine a winner, such as if election results are contested up to federally-mandated deadlines.

Regardless of the method used to choose Electors, they all met, in their states, on one day set by law. Each voted for two people, at least one of whom was not a citizen of their state. Those votes were then counted, and a list of each name and the number of votes was signed and certified and sent to the President of the Senate. Then, in front of a joint session of Congress, the President of the Senate opened the vote counts from each state. These were totaled, and the President was the person with the most votes, if the count is a majority. If there was a tie, then the members of the House of Representatives immediately took a vote and that winner was the President.
Quote:
The Congress may determine the Time of choosing the Electors, and the Day on which they shall give their Votes; which Day shall be the same throughout the United States.

Unhappy

It'd be nice if everyone were late to work because of voting and those planes crashed into buildings devoid of people.

i think it was kind of bullshit that the entire nation shut down for days after 9/11. i mean, other countries exeperience war all the time, and they hardly bat an eye at it. we have one attack on us, and we have no clue what to do with ourselves. that's kinda creepy.
