Question Digital Camera Recommendation

I know this has been posted a lot recently, but I am going to Europe next month and I have been looking around for a new camera. I was planning on going with the Canon S400, because of its small size and 4mp capability, but it only has a 3x optical zoom. Yesterday I was looking online and came across the Pentax Optio 450. It is nearly the same size and weight, with a 4.13mp, yet it has a 5x optical zoom. Anyone here have any experience with Pentax and are they a reliable camera.
Here is a link with the specs:

Yeah, but the 3x just isn't enough.

which is more important, zoom or image quality? take pics at 4mp, and crop them if need be.

Yeah, but like I said in my original post, the Pentax has all the features of the Canon, but with the 5x zoom instead of 3x. By this rational, why wouldn't I go with the Pentax. I haven't read anything bad about it so far.

it's absolutely unimportant how many times the zoome is. what matters is how long the maximum focal length is.

that being said, a friend of mine has a casio exillim, and it is fantastic. extremely small and 120 mm focal length. i don't know though, if you can get it in the US

Where would you find out how long the focal length is on a digital camera? I've only seen this on 35mm cameras before.

this info should be available on review sites and stuff. the problem is, that you can't really compare 35 mm focal lengthes to digital ones, since, caused by the small size of the chip there is some multiplication factor involved. if you take the canon eos 300d as an example the focal length on the lenses you are using has to be multiplicated by 1.6 to get the effective focal length. making a 100 mm to a 160 mm lens. for compact digis this factor is way higher (up to 20 or 30) i heard that www.dpreview.com is a rather good site for digicam-reviews

at least the dumb bitch who stole my s400 came clean. well, admitted to packing it in her bag by mistake even though she checked her bag to make sure she didn't pack it by mistake. she must have realized it is no good to her without the battery charger. i still haven't got it back, though.
