Valencia (Spanish) and Basle (Swiss) qualified from the group. liverpool needed to win and they could only manage a draw...boo-hoo! so they're out!

[i think you may be getting confused. the champions league is different from the premier league, where liverpool were top. the premier league is all english teams...you need to qualify for the champions league by winning (or more recently, finishing really highly in) your own domestic league. so liverpool qualified for it by coming 2nd last year in the premier league

i can imagine it may come across as confusing

I actually got that portion .. what was confusing was that Liverpool were top of their league and still missed out.

But, to make things much clearer:

So they lost on an international level, right?

Anyone make it from the English league or if Liverpool didn't make it no one did?

the mini-league that they play in 'europe' (against so-called 'top' european teams) is entirely separate from how they're doing in their own league. they qualify for the european competition based on LAST SEASON'S results/ finishing position. hence, a team could technically win the european competition and do crap in their own league in the same season.

last year, liverpool finished 2nd and so qualified for the champions league. at the moment, they're 1st in england, but that doesn't matter...the european thing is different. in that league, liverpool, basle, valencia and spartak moscow have to play eachother twice...then they draw up a lil league table of the results and the top 2 go thru to the next round. there are 8 of these lil groups, so technically it's a competition of the best 32 teams in europe (8x4).

man utd, arsenal and newcastle also qualified for the champions league...and they were each put into a separate group.

man utd and arsenal both qualified, with newcastle playing their last game tomorrow. if they win their game against feyennord (dutch)...they'll qualify as well.

the champions league is a BIG money-maker for the clubs, mainly due to all the tv money they get from it...that's why it's such a big deal.

no. international level is when countries select the best 11 players of that nationality to play against eachother... e.g. the World Cup

you have to be English to play for England for example

the champions league is 'club' level...it's all about who is willing to pay the players the wages pretty much...teams are made up of a whole bunch of nationalities
