Exclamation I need help with my slave!

drive that is... (heh, i accidentally typed dave instead of drive initially )

Anyways....installed a slave drive...the comp says its running correctly and recognizes it as a slave....

However, its not listed as a drive under my computer. How do i access/change it/that?

It was previously used, and i'm running windows 98 version 1

KTHNX

Wha? Are we talking hard-drive or CD drive? Basically you need to make sure of a few things:

The master needs to go on the first connector on the IDE cable, the slave goes on the second one (the one on the end).
You need to set the jumpers on the slave drive so it knows it's a slave. There should be a diagram on the case, just put the jumper over the right pins.
You'll probably need to do the same for your master drive, only set it to 'master with slave'
If it's a hard drive, go into your BIOS and do an autodetect. If you're into that kind of thing. Also, it might need partioning etc if it's not already formatted

I've had enough of being tech support for tonight, I'm going to bed

its a hard drive and i still need help with it!

The jumper thing is set up correctly..
Someone fucked with BIOS and yeah, i think its working right in that respect

Ooh...i hadn't noticed the whole "master to slave" thing. Hmmm...

And how would i partition it anyways? Should it show up on my list of drives automatically ? right now there's nothing

if you haven't already press the f4 or f11 or whatever the hell it is that you press right when your computer comes on to get to bios- if it doesnt say just mash all of them constantly- sometimes its delete too. then look all around there- if its not showing up in bios it wont show up, so look all around there- i remember one time it wouldnt show up but finally i saw in some other area i had to choose to allow 2 drives or something odd and *then* do an auto detect.

oh, and check to make sure your computer's plugged in

Weeeeelllll, if you go to your BIOS and do an autodetect it should pop up with the two drives. Then the new HD should show up in My Computer - I think if it isn't formatted it will just seem empty, like a blank CD. But since you said it was pre-used, it's probably going to be fine. The master-with-slave setting shouldn't stop the second one from showing up necessarily, but it can cause problems, so make sure it's right. And make sure you have the drive the right way up, or the jumper will be in the wrong place (I've done that before).

If the drive doesn't show up in the bios, you have problems - so start there first. If you think you've done something wrong, just hit the Exit Without Saving key (there's a bunch at the bottom of the screen). I'd tell you exactly where to go if I knew which bios you had

This isn't really amateur stuff, but if the drive is new, you need to partition and format it.

FDISK to partition, and FORMAT to format.
