Talking Hey, I've an idea! Let's debate something!

Real world citizenship involves political, diplomatic, and military leadership as well as respect for every individual human being.

Now take an affirmative or negative stance and back it up!

..

I need an A.

It does not require respect. But, respect helps in productivity.

I wish I knew.

I think he means like....in order for a country to be a good 'citizen' of the world. Whatever that really means.

i think i'd probably adopt the stance of illustrating what the ideal citizen should do, and essentially agreeing with the sentiments of the question, then contrast that with a "real life" citizen who doesn't give a shit. my conclusion would be that we're all fucked.

there ya go.... A

So to be a citizen of the 'real world', you have to be a political, diplomatic and military leader?

No.

In order for an actual nation to be considered a good 'citizen' (for lack of a better word) of the world, they must be willing to lead others politically, diplomatically, and militarily.

So then there can only be one citizen since only one nation could possible lead in all 3 at the same time.

Well not really.

But that's not the point anyway.

Nevermind!

You should have requested more clarification from your teacher.

We did.

He didn't really give us any though. He's weird like that sometimes.

But eh, it doesn't matter. My partner and I are the two smartest kids in the class....we shouldn't have any trouble.

Yeah, that assignment sucks. It's about as broad of category as you could get. But, just make your arguments very literal and I'm sure you'll be right.

Well it's supposed to be broad. There's probably going to end up being about 12 debates on this topic. And we have to be prepared to take either side. We don't get to pick.

Fun times indeed.

Ohhhh, you didn't mention nations. I don't think they need to 'lead' other nations, just provide a good example. The idea of a citizen is being a member of some group with a common goal - to an extent, what's good for them is good for everyone. If someone is behaving in a way which is highly detrimental to the rest of the group, their behavior is not considered that of a 'good citizen'. So I guess being a good citizen nation involves integration into the international community, and being considerate of other citizen nation. I think a willingness to help out other nations is a definite positive, I'm not sure it's actually necessary to fit the definition though.

What it comes down to is ignoring your own needs to a certain degree, to respect the needs of others. So a nation may have to balance the needs of its own people with the needs of other nations, just as we have to do on a personal level. Of course other citizens needs to respect your own needs (the needs of your people, in this case) when weighing up situations.
