Question Networking probems. Help me, seriously.

I'm trying to move my music files from my old computer (Windows 95, Pentium 1, no burner) to my new comp (XP). I went to a comp store, they said I could do it by creating a simple netowrk between the two using an ethernet connection. So I set it up, create the work group through XP, and it initializes a disk so that the properties can be sent to the other computer. But when I try to install the properties on my old computer, it says I need at least windows 98 for it to work. Is there any other way for me to do this?? Ideas, help, techies!!!

That might be the case, I haven't run Windows 95 on any system in years so I have no idea if it can interface with XP but knowing Microsoft it probably won't be able to.

Just upgrade the 95 machine to 98 and try it, Windows 98 should be fairly easy to find on Kazaa.

Question

Can't you just connect them and assign them each an IP instead of obtaining it automatically under TCP/IP properties. I've got a 98 machine networked to an XP one, and Ive had others and Ive never had to use disks or anything.

If you don't mind a slower transfer you could just use ICQ or some other chatting software to send the files.

Just set up both computers to use DCHP for WINS resolution, and automatically obtain an IP address. Then make sure they both have TCP/IP, IPX, and NetBUI installed. Assign them both to the same workgroup, and BAM! you've got a network. However, if that doesn't work. . . well, I don't have quite so much networking experience with win95, so I don't know how much I can troubleshoot from there. Would it be simpler to install the old hard drive in the new computer, move the files, and then move the hard drive back?

That was my idea too, yet my dad says I can't because it will void the warrenty on our compter by opening it up. Plus I don't want any other person touvhing it because I'm still not sure if i got rid of ALL the porn on it.

Y'all are fucking crackheads. I particularly liked the one explanation to install every fucking protocol possible and then you have a network.

Hey, I was just making sure the guy the same stuff installed on all of his boxes. I don't hack netcode for a living. What's your expert advice, o keeper of the ether?

I don't quite understand what he's trying to do and why it would ask for a Windows 98 disk if he has 95. I haven't used XP either, but I know that it has a different setup than the previous versions. He has to have file sharing enabled, and he has to share the drive he wants to export the info from. He should be able to just use NetBUI but hey, there's a lot of ways to set up a network. He should do a search on google for peer to peer networking. He should also have a crossover cable if he's just doing it from one computer to another.

awright, awright. I just didn't appreciate the flame, is all. XP networks seem to work basically the same, the process to edit network properties is just a little different, in an attempt to be more integrated into the operating system. He's dealing with some kind of automatic set-up feature on XP that I'm not familiar with, but I gather it's designed to automatically transfer network properties to another computer so that you don't have to tediously set up workstation after workstation, which is fine. However, it seems to have been designed to work with win-98 and later machines, due to the relatively big changes between win95 and win98's netcode - it's not asking for a win98 CD, but for the actual operating system.

I was just trying to give him the simplest and most more-or-less foolproof system for setting up a simple network with a hub and two ethernet cards, using what I know about the two operating systems and my experience with networking. Incidentally, TheJoker, NetBUI isn't called NetBUI anymore in WinXP, but it's got another, similar name; NetBIOS, I think it is. The tip about making sure you've got everything shared, however, is a good one. And yeah, definitely make sure you're going through a hub, unless you specifically have a crossover cable -- otherwise, you'll never get it to work.

yes, i have a crossover cable. i pulled an ethernet card out of the AS IS pile of cards, so I can't install it fully with the software.

Ah. Well that's going to be problem one. It's gonna be hard to find Win95 drivers for anything these days.

Try to find out what kind of card it is. It's usually written somewhere on the card. There are a lot of legacy driver sites on the internet. Do a search on google. Copy the closest drivers you can find on to a floppy and try to install it that way.

OR

Spend $15 and get a cheap network card.

I'm telling you, by far the simplest way is to use ICQ. The transfer itself will take a while if you have tons of megs, but it's no problem to set up.
